U.S. Lacrosse Foundation Welcomes Gary Williams To Second Annual Fall Ball Putting Tournament

Aug. 26, 2002

BALTIMORE - The US Lacrosse Foundation will welcome some 200 lacrosse enthusiasts and University of Maryland head men's basketball coach Gary Williams to its second annual Fall Ball Putting Tournament September 17 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The US Lacrosse Foundation event, sponsored by Legg Mason and STX Golf, will begin with the first of three shotgun starts at 5 p.m. and conclude with a dinner and awards ceremony.

The tournament, to be held at prestigious golf courses around the country each year, raised over $80,000 for US Lacrosse development efforts at the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., last year. Entry fees are $2,500 per foursome or $750 per individual. Hole sponsorships are $1,000 each. All proceeds from the event go to US Lacrosse's drive to fuel the growth of the sport.

"Caves Valley is Baltimore's showcase golf course. It has become very well renowned and we're happy to host the event there," said Gary Gill, chair of the US Lacrosse Foundation Fall Ball Putting Tournament planning committee. "Our goal is to move this event around geographically to encourage the local lacrosse communities to get together and celebrate lacrosse, and help the sport grow across the nation."

Caves Valley hosted the 2002 U.S. Senior Open. Designed by Tom Fazio and dedicated in 1991, the club covers 962 acres of rolling hills and lush valleys in Baltimore County. Caves Valley hosted the 1995 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship and will cohost, along with Loyola College, the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.

Williams, a Maryland alum entering his 14th year as head coach, guided the Terrapins to the 2002 NCAA championship. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year and is now the sixth-winningest coach in ACC history. He will speak as part of the post-tournament reception.
