Recap| Box Score| Quotes

  • The Maryland basketball team (No. 21 AP, No. 17 USA Today/ESPN) posted a 108-58 victory in their first-ever meeting with the Hampton Pirates. The Terps move to 8-3 on the season (1-0 ACC), while Hampton falls to 6-4, (2-0 MEAC). All 13 Terrapins registered points on Wednesday for the first time this season, with three Terps achieving career-highs.

  • The Terps opened the game with a 20-4 run by the 13:46 mark in the first half, tying their advantage posted against Wagner (Jan. 4) one game ago. Hampton cut the lead to 10, 28-18 at 9:30, but the Terrapins put together a 13-2 run by the 4:52 mark and then a 13-4 run to close out the half.

  • The Terrapins posted the second 100-point game this season and the 100th in school history. The Terps finished the game shooting .592 (42 of 71) from the field, marking the fourth time this season Maryland has shot better than .500.

  • The 50-point margin of victory was the Terps' 22nd in program history, and second this season. The Terps downed Duquesne, 89-39, on Nov. 30.

  • Senior forward Ryan Randle finished the contest with 16 points, shooting 6 of 10 from the field after beginning the game a perfect 3-for-3. Randle, who tied Maryland's single-game field goal record by shooting 10-for-10 against Wagner (21 points, Jan. 4), set a new Maryland record for consecutive field goals made in multiple games. He made his last three shots against Georgia Tech (20 points, Dec. 29), went 10-for-10 vs. the Seahawks, and opened the game 3-for-3 on Wednesday to combine for 16 straight field goals across the three games. The previous Terrapin record was 15 straight field goals, set by Greg Manning between two games in the 1981 season.

  • Randle hauled in 12 rebounds to go along with his 16 points, marking his third double-double of the season. Randle posted the first double-double of his career with 20 points and 16 rebounds against then-No. 10 Indiana (Dec. 3), and then followed up three games later with 18 and 10 vs. Florida (Dec. 14). Randle has scored in double-figures eight times this season after only one game in double-digits as a junior transfer last season. He has four games of double-figure rebounds as a senior, after posting a then-career high nine against William & Mary as a junior.

  • With eight assists in the game, senior All-America candidate Steve Blake totals 834 for his career. Blake passed former UCLA Bruin Pooh Richardson, who finished his career with 833 in 1988-89, and is now in 18th place on the all-time NCAA assists chart. Blake's seven steals in the first half was more than Hampton's team total (nine).

  • Maryland coach Gary Williams logged the 489th win of his career, and is now just 11 wins from 500. He is the 21st-leading active coach in America in terms of victories, and is 93-2 against non-conference opponents at home since taking the Terps' reins in the 1989-90 season.

  • Maryland led at halftime, 54-31 (23 points), marking the largest halftime lead for the Terps in over a month. The Terrapins held a 50-19, 31-point, lead over Duquesne earlier in the season on Nov. 30, 2002.

  • Currently ranked second in the ACC and in the NCAA's top 10 in field goal percentage defense, the Terrapins held Hampton to .299 shooting, marking the sixth time this season Maryland has held an opponent to under 33%. The Terps have outshot nine of their first 11 opponents in 2002-03.

  • Senior guard Drew Nicholas scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half. The Terps' scoring leader, who also added five rebounds, has finished with double-figure points every contest of the 2002-03 season (11 games).

  • Junior transfer Jamar Smith scored a career-high 17 points and pulled down six rebounds, throwing down several spectacular dunks and helping the Terrapins to a 68-26 advantage for points in the paint. He finished the game 7 of 9 (.778) from the field, a career high.

  • Maryland freshmen Nik Caner-Medley and Travis Garrison started together for the fourth straight game, marking the first time since 1993-94 that a pair of true freshmen have started as many consecutive contests. That season true freshmen Keith Booth and Joe Smith were regulars in the starting lineup, each starting all 30 games en route to the Terps' 18-12 record and Sweet 16 appearance.

  • Rookie guard Chris McCray dunked an alley-oop pass from senior Calvin McCall with just over six minutes to play as part of a career-high tying nine- point performance.

  • Sophomore guard Mike Grinnon posted a career-high six points on 2-for-3 shooting.
