COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team defeated Florida State, 3-0 (30-12, 30-20, 30-27), on Saturday in Comcast Center Gymnasium. With the conference victory, the Terps improve to 16-4, 5-1 in the ACC, while the Seminoles drop to 9-8 (1-4 ACC).
Maryland was led by the strong play of junior Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario), who posted a match-high 15 kills, 13 digs and four aces, and senior Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.), who had 14 kills and hit .542.
Maryland cruised to a 30-12 first-game victory by hitting .500 as a team and committing just one error, while Florida State struggled with a .067 team attack percentage. The Seminoles would try to rally in games two and three, but the Terrapins eventually clinched the match with strong blocking and few attacking errors. For the match, Maryland hit .370 as a team, and had three players (DiLivio, Jones, and junior Aimee Huddleston) that hit over .400.
Sophomore Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.), the nation's leader in blocks, notched five (two solo) against the Seminoles, helping the Terps to outblock Florida State, 11-4. Huddleston, in addition to her 38 assists, also had five blocks and seven digs, and both Kathy Shahrokh (Ellicott City, Md.) and Rachel Moore (Fayetteville, N.C.) entered the match and served well in the victory. Shahrokh finished with two aces, while Moore had one.
The Seminoles were led by Cassie McLaughlin, who posted 10 kills and hit .368, and Sarah Griffin, who had eight kills, six digs and a block.
The Terps are back in action tomorrow when they take on the North Carolina Tar Heels at 5 p.m. in Comcast Center Gymnasium. Admission to all Maryland volleyball matches is free.
