COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The fourth-seeded Maryland field hockey team takes on
fifth-seeded Virignia in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference
Tournament which begins on Thursday, Nov. 6 in Charlottesville, Va. The game
is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Maryland, ranked third in the nation, ended the regular season with a 2-2
conference mark, tying Duke and North Carolina for second in the league. The
Terps drew the fourth seed by virtue of tie-breaker rules. Wake Forest, the
top team in the nation all season, was a perfect 4-0 in ACC action and
earned the top seed in the tournament. The winner of the Maryland-Virginia
matchup moves on to face the Demon Deacons in a Friday semifinal. The
Cavaliers went 0-4 in the ACC.
Earlier this season, the Terps defeated the Cavs, 3-2, in College Park. In a
tightly contested match, sophomore Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) scored
the game-winning goal 33 seconds after Virginia tied the game at 2-2 and
with just over a minute left to play in the game, avoiding the overtime.
Maryland will be looking to capture its sixth ACC Tournament title, having
won it in 1982, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.
Second-seeded North Carolina and third-seeded Duke square off on Friday at 4
p.m. The Championship game will be played Sunday, Nov. 9 at 12 p.m. That
game will also be broadcast by Comcast SportsNet, FOX Sports Net South and
the Sunshine Network.
Admission for the games is free. All matches will be played at the
University Hall Turf Field.
