Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
On Wisconsin:
"When you play this team, you're playing a team that has won the Big Ten the last two years. They've been the best team. I think that's one of the best kept secrets in America, the fact that Wisconsin has been the best team in the Big Ten the last two years. You hear about a lot of those other teams, but when I found out that we were matched up against Wisconsin, I realized that we've played two great games with them in the last couple of years. They've got a couple guys banged up, and when thy get them back they're really going to be effective."
On the Terps:
"I hope we can run our offense like (Wisconsin) at some point this year. We're not there yet with our offense, but they still did a great job. My guys' competitiveness in wanting to win that game really showed me something because this was our fist game where it was really on the line. They made a great run at us and took the lead and we had to really suck it up to win the thing. I think we really showed some things tonight, that as we get better with some technical things, it will really help us be a good basketball team if we continue to do those things."
On Jamar Smith and John Gilchrist:
"I was really proud of Jamar Smith, our only senior. He really stepped it up when we needed it. I thought John Gilchrist in the second half, really got us into the offense. As a point guard, that's the most important thing that we do. We've had it for the last three or four years; we need it this year, and John really did it for us against a very good guard tonight."
Wisconsin Head Coach Bo Ryan
On the lack of scoring in overtime:
"When you're playing from behind, [you take] some shots at the end trying to catch up. When you're on the road, in that kind of situation, that's not good, so you're not going to get the better shots. Two or three of those misses came when we were down three to five points, so that's not the shots that got us back to get the lead with a few seconds to go."
On fatigue in overtime:
"You look at all the timeouts, a two-minute break and a two-minute T.V. timeout, we used all of our timeouts. They got more rest there then they get in any practice. A lot of times you have to do that because you don't have enough timeouts left -- we used two early to save two turnovers."
"We took care of the ball in the second half, got on the offensive boards better in the second half. Those were hustle opportunities. Those 20 minutes, we did a pretty good job of that. We forced a tough shot, the ball bounces hard to the weak side and we don't get that rebound. They had a player get to that spot."
On Maryland's inside size:
"The senior [Jamar Smith] took over. They needed Smith to do what he did and he did it. I thought we did a decent job on the other guys as far as really making them work at it ... In those last five to eight minutes and in overtime, Smith was the guy. It was his play that made the difference in the game."
Maryland Guard John Gilchrist
On the big win:
"This is a big win for the program. I want to say thank you to all my teammates and everybody that helped contribute to this win, even the people who didn't play. Just by practicing hard, we were...really prepared tonight."
Maryland Guard Chris McCray
On his late game three-pointer:
"It was just in the flow of the game. I saw that the guy was out there backing up so when John had the ball I just had 'shoot' in my head the whole time and once I get that kind of confidence, I start knocking down shots."
Maryland Center Jamar Smith
On his performance:
"I'd say this is the best game I've played at Maryland so far, but there is more to come. It's hard for big guys to defend me because of my quickness. It is a lot of trouble for our opponents."
Wisconsin Guard Devin Harris
On how the team handled the pressure of a big game:
"I'm proud of the way the guys played. We played hard and fought back in the second half. We showed some heart, but just came up a little short in the end."
On how to get the rest of the team involved:
"We just have to come out and learn from our mistakes. We have to be a little bit more disciplined and buy into what the coach is saying. And just go out there and play hard for 40 minutes."
On what to focus on next:
"We've got to go out there and prepare like any other game. Try to forget this game. I mean, not forget what's important, like things we can learn from. We have to go out there, like it's a new day, and play hard."
