Post-Game Quotes: Maryland 8, Virginia 7

March 29, 2003

Recap| Final Stats

Head Coach Dave Cottle on the Terps defense:
"This is our best defensive effort of the season. When you play a potent offense like that you have to be aware every minute of the game. We did a great job of defensively in transition and didn't give up a lot of breaks."

Cottle on Michael Howley's defense:
"John Christmas is very athletic, and I thought Michael Howley did a great job staying in front of him. It got a little scary at the end. . . . But I thought it was our best defensive effort this year."

Michael Howley on the win and the defensive effort:
"This is the first complete game we've had since Duke. We had plans to change a couple things up defensively during the game, but the game plan worked from the beginning so we stuck with it.

"We switched a couple things up (on defense). The coaches had plans to change a couple other matchups if the ones we started with didn't work, but they seemed to be working."

Virginia Coach Dom Starsia on the loss:
"We may have been a little preoccupied with the big picture. We lost track of the immediate here. Maryland probably wasn't thinking about a national championship all week. They were thinking about beating Virginia.

"We're trying to hit a home run with every possession,. Nobody is willing to work. . . . To me, we seem a little full of ourselves on offense."
