Postgame Quotes: Duke 68, Maryland 60

Recap| Box Score| Notes

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams' Opening Statement:
"First of all I went into the game thinking that we could win that game. We didn't get out to a very good start at the beginning of the game. You know I thought we had a pretty good feel at half time. But Duke came out to strong at the start of the second half. When we got out rebounded the way we did on the offensive glass, it doesn't say much for our rebounding. This is not the biggest team that we will play this year, yet they hurt us the most on the glass to their credit -- they worked very hard."

Williams on the loss:
"People say that we have a young team, but I want to win this year. I thought we had a shot coming into tonight's game. We played well at times -- we did some good things -- but against a team like Duke that is number one in the country, you have to do more than play well for half the game."

Williams on Duke's team:
"What we have to understand is that Duke is a very tough team and they are not going to give you anything. I don't get discouraged. I just thought that we had a chance coming into tonight's game.

Williams on Nik Caner-Medley:
"I thought Nik performed very well and helped us out down the stretch. He did a good job. I think he left it all out on the floor. "

Maryland Guard Chris McCray On the tough loss:
"Everybody was ready, coach had us ready. I don't know what happened. We came out and didn't execute the way coach told us. We didn't do the things we did to win ten games. We did the things we did to lose five games. That's why we lost."

Maryland Forward Nik Caner-Medley on continuing to play hard:

"In a game like this, not giving up should come naturally. The thing I feel most bad about is that I don't think we put our best game on the floor. When you play the number one team in the nation, you can't have any lapses in energy. It's a matter of who wants it more and tonight, they wanted it more."

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski on Duke's victory:
"We won a terrific game tonight. Both teams played with all their hearts, you couldn't find two teams who played with more heart...Maryland played really hard tonight and they're a very good team. The crowd did a good job supporting them."

Krzyzewski both teams' defensive efforts:
"Buckets were hard to come by for both teams. It was not easy for either team to score inside because of the shot-blocking ability."

Krzyzewski on sophomore guard J.J. Redick's performance:
"J.J. [Redick] was great for us. We tried to get the ball in his hands down the stretch so when they fouled he would be the one getting fouled, and when J.J. gets fouled he usually makes his shots."

Krzyzewski on senior guard Chris Duhon's performance:
"Chris Duhon was huge for us. I told him in the locker room at halftime, `If I put up the word determination, I'd put your picture right next to it.' You'll hear about J.J. [Redick] tonight, but we wouldn't have won without Chris."

Duke guard J.J. Redick on the atmosphere of this game:
"It felt great to win. They're a great team and they have a great crowd. It's a tough place to win, so it felt good to come out with a win here."

Redick on Maryland's defense at the end of the game:
"(D.J.) Strawberry posted me up. They like to post up their guards. There was a play where I just got called for a foul and then I reached down and got all ball. The ref didn't make a call. At the time, I was falling out of bounds when Chris (Duhon) grabbed the ball. It was just a good play at the end."

Duke guard Chris Duhon on how Duke came out on top:
"We did everything we could to win the game, and in the end we did more things than they did."

Duhon on the importance of this win:
"The last two years we haven't won or even played well. We wanted to come out and we didn't want to quit. Last year, we kind of quit and let them do whatever they want. This year, it was a tough physical game. It was a battle out there. We knew they were going to make runs, and they made them. We were able to hold them off at the end though, and I think that shows that this team is maturing."
