Postgame Notes: Maryland 89, Mount St. Mary's 56

  • Maryland moved to 8-3 with a 89-56 victory over Mount St. Mary's in an intrastate battle at Comcast Center on Saturday. The Terps rebounded after losing their first Atlantic Coast Conference matchup of the year at Florida State last Sunday.

  • The victory boosts Maryland's home record against non-conference opponents since Dec. 30, 1989 to 98-1. In his 15 seasons as head coach of the Terrapins, Gary Williams is 101-2 in non-conference games in College Park. Maryland has now won 11 home games in a row versus non-conference foes.

  • The Terps improved to 10-5 in their first contest of the New Year under Williams. They are now unbeaten in six non-conference January openers since Williams took over in the 1989-1990 season. Maryland has won its last five games played immediately following the New Year, dating back to the 1999-2000 season.

  • The loss drops Mount St. Mary's to 2-9 overall. The Mountaineers' last victory came Saturday against Navy. Sophomore guard Landy Thompson hit a runner at the buzzer to give Mount St. Mary's a thrilling 54-53 win on the road. Next on the schedule for the Mountaineers is a trip up north to take on Quinnipiac on Jan. 10.

  • Maryland has never lost to Mount St. Mary's, moving to 4-0 in the all-time series. The contest marked the Mountaineers' first visit to Comcast Center. The Terps were victorious, 102-74, at Cole Field House on Nov. 22, 1997. Maryland also earned victories over Mount St. Mary's in 1991 and 1987.

  • The Terps were 6-of-9 on threes in the first half. Sophomore point guard John Gilchrist was a perfect 3-3 on three-point tries, including the final basket of the half with the clock ticking down. Sophomore shooting guard Chris McCray made 2-3 treys in the first half and freshman guard Mike Jones connected on his lone three-point attempt of the period. Maryland opened the game shooting 83 percent on three-pointers, draining five of their first six attempts from beyond the arc.

  • Four Terps reached double figures in the scoring column against the Mountaineers. Gilchrist led the way with 16 followed by McCray with 15. Sophomore Nik Caner-Medley dropped in 14 on 5-of-9 shooting and senior Jamar Smith finished with 12.

  • For the second consecutive game, McCray scored in double figures in the first half. He racked up 12 first period points versus the Mountaineers on 5-7 shooting. He is averaging nearly 14 points per game over the last three contests.

  • The Terp defense held Mount St. Mary's to 32 percent shooting for the game, with the Mountaineers connecting on 19-of-59 shots from the floor. Maryland also caused 17 turnovers, including 10 in the second half.

  • Freshman forward Ekene Ibekwe established a new personal-best in rebounds with 10. He joins Jamar Smith and sophomore Nik Caner-Medley as the only Terps to reach double digits in boards this season. Ibekwe also added 7 points and a career-high four blocked shots.

  • With 14 points and 14 rebounds, Jamar Smith notched his eighth double-double in 11 games this season. The 6-foot-9 senior leads the ACC in that category, four ahead of Clemson's Sharrod Ford. The school's all-time record for double-doubles in a season is 12 and is held by former Terp great and current Toronto Raptors forward Lonny Baxter. His 14 rebounds were a new career-high as well as a team season-high.

  • Gilchrist scored seven straight points during a stretch which spanned both the first and second halves. With seven seconds left in the the opening period, he sank a three-pointer to put the Terps up, 48-34. Following halftime, Gilchrist made a short jumper and a pair of free throws to open up an 18-point lead. He finished with 16 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.
