COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Members of the 2004-05 Maryland basketball team and coaching staff assisted the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha in raising $21,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities as they took part in the Hoops For Kids event on Wednesday.
Defending ACC champs Chris McCray, Nik Caner-Medley, and Mike Grinnon joined assistant coaches Mike Lonergan and Keith Booth, "Voice of the Terps" Johnny Holliday, the Terrapin Spirit Squad and many members of the University of Maryland Greek Community at the event at Ritchie Coliseum.
The Terrapin players and coaches judged a slam dunk contest as representatives of different fraternities wowed the audience with dazzling jams on an eight-foot rim. Holliday, now in his 26th season calling Maryland football and basketball games, served as the event's emcee.
"It felt good to help out a great cause by participating in Hoops For Kids," said McCray. "The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity did a great job organizing the event, and I am glad that we were able to help out in our small way."
Fraternity and sorority members went on to participate in a timed lay-up, free throw and 3-point shootout. Three students were selected at random for the chance to win a car with a half-court shot, but none were successful.
The Hoops for Kids event, however, was a rousing success as event organizer and Lambda Chi Alpha brother Kelley Lange presented a check for $21,000 to Ronald McDonald Charities representatives toward the close of the evening.
"It made me truly happy to see the Greek Community so enthusiastic about supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities," said Lange.
There are 237 Ronald McDonald Houses in 24 countries worldwide, each serving as a home-away-from-home for families who have seriously ill children in area hospitals. In the greater Washington, D.C., area there are Ronald McDonald Houses downtown near the Children's National Medical Center and also in Northern Virginia.
