
Terp Women First, Men Fourth In ACC Quad Swim Meet

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team broke four pool records at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Friday on the first day of competition at the ACC quad meet. The Terps lead the host Yellow Jackets 131-54 and are ahead of Florida State 117-69 and Virginia Tech 119-67. The men are in fourth place, trailing Georgia Tech 107-79, the Seminoles 126-60 and the Hokies 101-84.
Freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.) broke the pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning the event with a time of 9:45.69. She also finished second in the 200-free in 1:50.95. Senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) set a new pool mark in the 200-IM, winning the race with an NCAA `B' cut time of 2:04.17.
Both relays also set pool records. The 200-free relay team of senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.), Mulyayeva, freshman Tanya Nielsen (Irvine, Calif.) and senior Cynthia Weir won in 1:34.68, and the 400-medley relay team of Knepper, junior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) won in 3:48.15.
Miller won the 200-free with a time of 1:50.69, her second `B' cut time in the event in only the second meet of the season. Knepper took the 100-back with a time of 56.79.
Weir finished second in the 50-free (23.86) and freshman Stacie Lesneski (Gardner, Mass.) took second in the 200-fly (2:05.69). Freshman Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel) came in third in the 200-free (1:52.84) and Kovacs finished third in the 100-breast (1:04.81). Senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) placed third in the 200-IM (2:07.30) and fourth in the 1,000-free (10:15.65). Freshman Atalie Abranovic (Kittaning, Pa.) took fourth in the 100-breast (1:05.26).
On the men's side, freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) was the only winner for the Terps, taking the 200-IM in 1:52.70. He also finished third in the 200-fly with a time of 1:54.33.
Maryland's 200-free relay team of senior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.), freshman Kevin Ford (Sinking Spring, Pa.), senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) and junior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) came in second with a time of 1:25.00.
Fried placed third in the 50-free (21.15) and Weinberg finished third in the 100-back (52.07). Ford took fifth in the 50-free (21.40), while senior Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.) came in fifth in the 1,000-free (9:33.09) and senior Tim Potter (West Deptford, N.J.) finished fifth in the 100-breast (59.82).
The ACC quad meet concludes tomorrow at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta. Action begins at 12 p.m.
