COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Nik Caner-Medley and John Gilchrist put forth standout performances as the Terrapin men's basketball team took part in a Red-Black scrimmage on Saturday. Approximately 400 Maryland fans were on hand for a preseason glimpse of the Terps in action at Comcast Center.
"I think some really good things happened today," said head coach Gary Williams. "Now is the time during the year where we're trying to get better as a team. There were a lot of positives, but we have to work on some things like team defense."
Caner-Medley was a solid performer in both halves of the scrimmage, which the red team won, 94-80, although the players changed teams throughout. The junior forward totaled 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including a 4-of-6 performance from long range. Caner-Medley also added eight rebounds and five assists.
Gilchrist put together a fine all-around effort, scoring 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and dishing 11 assists. He totaled four steals which often led to transition baskets for his Terrapin teammates.
Shooting guard Chris McCray, called by one preseason publication "the most underrated player in the ACC," registered 22 points and added four steals. Sophomore guard Mike Jones scored 15 with six rebounds, and classmate D.J. Strawberry netted 13 with four steals and four assists.
In the post, sophomore Hassan Fofana went strong toward the basket throughout the day and totaled 15 points with six boards. Travis Garrison scored 15 and rejected five shots.
James Gist, the Terps only true freshman on the roster, displayed his potential for the crowd with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Gist electrified the Terp fans with a two-handed putback slam in the second half, and a few minutes later elevated well above the rim for a one-handed jam from the middle of the lane.
The Terps exhibition season begins on Friday, Nov. 5, when Maryland plays host to Division II powerhouse Bryant College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Comcast Center.
