COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - John Gilchrist scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and No. 23 Maryland was perfect from the free throw line for just the second time in school history, cruising past UNC-Asheville 96-72 Sunday.
Travis Garrison and Chris McCray added 15 points apiece and D.J. Strawberry scored 13 for the Terrapins (5-2), who had lost two of three games.
Bryan McCullough had 16 points for UNC-Asheville (1-5), which was playing for the first time in eight days and coming off their first win of the season over Western Carolina on Dec. 4.
Omar Collington scored 12 points for the Bulldogs.
The Terrapins, who entered the game shooting 68.5 percent from the free throw line, finished a perfect 13-for-13. The only other time Maryland converted all of its free throws was a 19-for-19 effort against Holy Cross on Jan. 21, 1985.
Maryland, which lost to then-unranked George Washington in the finals of the BB&T Classic on Dec. 5, quickly solved its offensive issues against UNC-Asheville, scoring the game's first 12 points.
The Terrapins' transition game and half-court and motion offenses - which struggled for consistency against George Washington - all produced points in bunches, forcing the Bulldogs to play catch-up from the onset.
McCray had 11 first-half points, helping the Terrapins to a 45-34 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs shot 14-for-38 in the first half and missed their first 11 shots from the field.
Mike Jones' 3-pointer put the Terps up 24-10 with 11:23 left in the first half, but UNC-Asheville rebounded with an 11-2 burst to get within 26-21.
Ekene Ibekwe's three-point play then jump-started a 10-2 Maryland run, with McCray's baseline turnaround jumper producing a 38-21 lead.
