COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland junior point guard John Gilchrist was named the ACC men's basketball player of the week after putting forth a standout performance during the Terps' 90-88 thrilling overtime victory over Florida State.
Gilchrist was one of several heroes for the Terps, who battled Sunday to an exhilarating victory in Maryland's ACC opener. The Virginia Beach, Va., native led the Terps with 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, all team highs, and drained the game-winning free throws with 6.6 seconds left in overtime.
In all, Gilchrist connected on 6-of-14 field goals and hit 7-of-10 free throws. It was his second-career double-double effort after netting 16 points and grabbing 10 boards vs. Memphis this season in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic.
Gilchrist's performance marked the first time a player led the Terps in scoring, rebounding and helpers since Gilchrist did so at Duke last year. His 13 rebounds easily eclipsed his previous career high (10 vs. Memphis, 11/26/04) and seven of his boards were on the offensive end of the floor. His eight assists were one shy of a career-best.
On the season, Gilchrist paces the Terps in scoring at 15.3 points per game, 7.3 assists per game, 2.8 steals per game, and now is tied for the team lead with 6.4 rebounds per game.
The conference player of the week honor is the first for the Terrapins this season, and the third of Gilchrist's career.
