NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Maryland (0-6) was unable to get on the scoreboard and struggled in the field in its 8-0 loss to Belmont University (9-0). The Terps came up with just three hits and one walk during the game.
Chris Clem had a career-high eight strikeouts in a strong start for Maryland today. Clem didn't allow a Bruin to reach base until the fourth inning when he surrendered his first hit of the game. In 5.2 innings of work, he allowed one earned run on seven hits and one walk.
Belmont took advantage of two defensive errors by the Terps in the sixth inning. The Bruins were able to score five runs in the inning, with three players hitting RBI-singles and Joel Novak knocking in one more on a ground-rule double to left. Another run scored on a mishandled throw on an attempted steal.
The Bruins scored their remaining runs with an RBI-single by Dennis Gomez in the seventh and a two-run single by Brad Doener in the eighth.
Seth Overbey came in to relieve Clem in the sixth inning. He pitched 1.1 innings with one earned run on two hits, while striking out two batters.
Brad Newman made his Terrapin debut, entering the game in the eighth. After Newman got into some trouble by loading the bases, the Terps brought in Brooks Norris to try and get out of the jam.
Anthony Buffone, Brian Jarosinski and Will Frazier were the three Terps with hits in the game.
On Sunday, Feb 19, Maryland will face off against Lipscomb University at Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn., with a scheduled start time of 2 p.m. EST.
