Maryland Baseball Takes Two From UMES, 9-1 & 10-6

ABERDEEN, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team took both games of a doubleheader from Maryland-Eastern Shore Tuesday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., by a score of 9-1 in the first game and 10-6 in the second.
Maryland (15-15) was in control of game one against UMES (2-34-1) from the first inning. Sophomore Matt Maropis led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. He came around to score when the next batter, senior Anthony Buffone, doubled to left center. Buffone came across the plate later in the inning on junior Jason Maxey's sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Brian Jarosinski gave the Terps another run by knocking in junior Kevin Hart with a single. Hart had stolen second after reaching on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. The Terrapins capped off the inning with freshman Dan Melvin doubling to bring in Jarosinski.
Melvin recorded another RBI double in the fourth inning, scoring junior Joe Sargent who had walked in his at bat. The Terrapins had another big inning at the plate in the fifth tacking another four runs to take a 9-0 lead.
The Terps started off the fifth by loading the bases with no outs. Jarosinski recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly and Sargent walked after Maryland loaded the bases again, bringing in another run. Maropis knocked in the other two runs with a single to center field.
Terrapin starter, junior Chris Bowen was solid en route to his team-leading fourth win of the season. Bowen struck out six batters, issued just two walks and surrendered six hits in six scoreless innings of work.
Maropis went 3-for-4 in the first game and stole a base while knocking in three runs and scoring another. Sargent also had a stolen base in the game.
In the second game, the Hawks got on the board first, taking a 4-0 lead with them into the fourth inning. Maryland fought back in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own to tie up the game. Melvin knocked in the first run for the Terps with a single and junior Truan Mehl brought in the other three with his first home run of the season.
After Maropis and Buffone successfully completed a double steal, Hart knocked the pair in with a single through the right side. The Terps tacked on another run in both the sixth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Terps expanded their lead to 10-6 with RBI singles from Buffone and Hart. Junior Josh Andrews made his first start of the season while freshman Casey Baron and junior Justin Hulse each made scoreless relief appearances.
Maropis and Buffone each went 3-for-5 in the second game, scoring two runs apiece. Hart and Mehl each knocked in three RBI with a pair of hits.
The Terrapins be in action next when they host the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Wednesday, April 7, at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
