COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Terrapin big man Jamar Smith, Maryland's lone senior from its 2004 ACC Championship team, heads to Orlando this week looking to land a summer league roster spot with the NBA franchise. Smith will participate in the Magic's free agent/rookie camp as he looks to sign a free agent contract with a NBA squad.
Smith hopes to join the Magic as they play in two summer league sessions this year: their own Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando and the Reebok Vegas Summer League in Las Vegas, Nev.
As a senior, Smith was second on the Maryland team in scoring with a 13.1 points per game average. His 8.8 rebounds per game average was second in the ACC, and helped the Terps lead the conference on the glass. His 11 double-doubles on the season ranked second among ACC players, and fell one shy from tying Maryland's single-season record (12), shared by Lonny Baxter and Terence Morris from the 2000 season.
Smith stepped up his play even further during the 2004 postseason, averaging 19.7 points and 8.0 rebounds during ACC Championship weekend to earn first team all-tournament honors. Including the Terrapins' two NCAA Tournament games, Maryland's primary inside player averaged 17.8 ppg while shooting .466 from the field and hitting at a .619 rate from the free throw line during the postseason.
Before arriving in College Park, the Sicklerville, N.J., native was a National Junior College Athletic Association All-American at Allegany College in Cumberland, Md., playing under the legendary Bob Kirk. Alongside former Terp Ryan Randle, Smith led Allegany to the JUCO title game in 2001. He averaged 17.9 ppg and 12.8 rpg in 2002 in his second season with the Trojans, prior to his days at Maryland.
