
Maryland To Celebrate Midnight Madness On October 15

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Midnight Madness and the 2004-05 basketball season are only a few weeks away!
The Maryland men's and women's basketball teams are nearing the final days before the 2004-05 season tips off, with Midnight Madness festivities planned for Friday evening, Oct. 15. Doors at Comcast Center open at 9:00 p.m. Fans can join coaches Gary Williams and Brenda Frese, and Kirk McEwen and Steve Ash from 98 Rock, as Maryland ushers in the season with a night of contests, giveaways and a laser-light show at midnight as the Terps are introduced to their fans for the first time this season.
Midnight Madness is a ticketed event, but ADMISSION IS FREE and free t-shirts will be given to the first 5,000 students in attendance. Beginning Friday, Oct. 1, students can register online for free tickets at www.tickets.umd.edu. Free tickets will be made available to the general public beginning Monday, Oct. 4, when fans of all ages can obtain tickets by calling 301-314-7070 or stopping by the Terrapin Ticket Office at 2740 Comcast Center (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.). If still available, free tickets may also be picked up on the night of the event.
"It should be a great night, and we would like to see as many Terrapin fans at Midnight Madness as possible," said Williams, who rode onto the court in 2003 at midnight on a Harley Davidson motorcycle. "Just like last year, our fans should be ready for a surprise!"

"Midnight Madness is an exciting time for everyone," added Frese. "I can't think of a better way to jump-start the 2004-05 season."
The festivities begin at 10:30 p.m. with the annual men's basketball alumni game followed by performances by the Maryland Gymkana Troupe, the Terrapin Spirit Squad and the Mighty Sound of Maryland pep band. After the lights go down and the teams are introduced at midnight, the men's and women's teams will hold their first Red/White scrimmages of the season.
Student competitions - including a Gary Williams Look-Alike contest - and giveaways will be conducted throughout the hour-and-a-half program leading up to the introductions of the 2004-05 Terps. "Voice of the Terps" Johnny Holliday and Maryland P.A. announcer Mac Barrett will be joined by McEwen and Ash from 98 Rock as hosts for the evening.
Fans are encouraged to bring canned food items as a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank. Drop locations will be situated outside the Comcast Center entrances, manned by members of Maryland's Student Athletic Advisory Council (S.A.A.C.) and staff from the Terps' Academic Support and Career Development unit.
