
Terp Women Defeat Georgia Tech, Fall to Virginia Tech and Florida State

College Park, Md. - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team defeated conference rival Georgia Tech 180-170, but fell to #21 Florida State 230-121 and #22 Virginia Tech 210.5-140.5 at the ACC quad meet. The men fell to all three teams by scores of 237.5-115.5 to the Yellow Jackets, 243-105 to the Seminoles and 222-131 to the Hokies. The women fall to a 1-2 in the ACC and the men fall to 0-3 in the conference.
The women's team picked up three individual wins at the meet. Sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Isreal) led the way for the women picking up her first win of the season in the 200-free (1:51.59) on Friday night. Finkler also finished fourth in the 100-free (52.08) followed by freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) with a time of 52.48.
Senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) swam to a solid first-place finish in the 200-breast with an NCAA `B' cut time of 2:17.19. She also finished second in the 100-breast (1:03.50) and was also part of the fourth-place 400-medley team.
Junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) picked up her first win of the season in the 400-IM (4:24.49) and finished second in the 1,000-free with a time of 10:13.29. Malanina also anchored the 400-medley relay team (3:53.98) to a fourth-place finish.
Senior Inbal Levavi (Kibbutz Givat Haim, Isreal) took third in the 200-IM (2:07.13) and 200-back (2:04.35), and fifth in the 200-free (1:54.39). Junior Erica Suguiyama (Ijamsville, Md.) finished second in the 200-fly (2:06.26), and fourth in the 100-fly (57.93) behind senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who came in third in the 100-fly with at time of 57.50.
The women's team ended the weekend with a third-place finish in the 400-medley relay (3:30.37) comprised of Malanina, Levavi, Skalinskaya and Finkler.
On the men's side, Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) and Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) each tallied a win. Gray won the 50-free in 20.96 and Ott took the 200-IM in a time of 1:53.08. Ott also finished third in the 200-fly (1:54.13). Gray ended the weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 100-free (46.21).
Ott swam to a fifth-place finish in the 200-breast (2:10.28) followed by junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) who finished sixth with a time of 2:10.46. Shepard and freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) took fourth and fifth in the 100-breast with times of 59.27 and 59.44, respectively.
The men's team ended the weekend with a second-place finish in the 400-medley relay team (3:06.85) comprised of freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), Gray, senior Pat Doyle (Norfolk, Va.), and sophomore Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany).
The Terps return to the pool next weekend when they take on Johns Hopkins and Howard. The meet begins at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at the Campus Recreation Center.
