
Terps Dominate Johns Hopkins, Howard

The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated Johns Hopkins and Howard bringing the women to a 3-2, 1-2 ACC record and the men to a 2-3, 0-3 ACC record. The men defeated the Blue Jays 130-99 and the Bison 183-39, while the women beat Hopkins 154-68 and Howard 172-49.
The women were led by junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), junior Erica Suguiyama (Ijamsville, Md.), and sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Isreal), each picked up two individual wins. Malanina won the 200-IM (2:07.04) and the 100-back (1:00.28), Suguiyama picked up wins in the 100-fly (58.06) and 200-free (1:56.53), and Finkler finished first in the 1,000-free (10:28.97) and the 100-free (52.67).
Senior Barbara Sumrall picked up her first win of the season in the 50-free (24.66) followed by sophomore Emily Smoak in second and junior Natalie Ferdinand in sixth. Inbal Levavi (Kibbutz Givat Haim, Isreal) snatched her first win of her senior season in the 500-free (5:07.89) followed by fellow-senior Krisztina Kovacs who finished third.
Freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) finished second in the 100-fly (59.04) and juniors Kat Csmova (Komarno, Slovakia) and junior Kerry McFadden (Longwood, Fla.) finished fourth and fifth in the 200-IM.
On the boards, freshman Jen Fink (Hanover, Pa.) won the 3-meter (233.55) board and sophomore Nicole Rose won on the 1-meter (249.15) board.
The Terps swept both the 400-medley relay (3:54.85) and the 400-free relay (3:36.97)
On the men's side, sophomore Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany) picked up his first two wins of the season in the 200-IM (1:57.47) and 500-free (4:43.41). Freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) tallied his first collegiate win in the 200-free (1:44.33), while Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) won the 100-free (46.79) picking up his second win this season.
Senior Pat Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) finished second in the 50-free (21.81) followed by freshmen John Closs (New Providence, N.J.), who finished fifth, and Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.), who took seventh in the event. Junior Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) finished second in the 100-fly (51.57) followed by senior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) in fourth and Eric Thomasson (Severn, Md.) in sixth.
Ott also finished second in the 100-back (53.72) with seniors Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.) finishing in third and Chris Starr (Ellicott City, Md.) finishing in sixth and second in the 1,000-free (9:45.98) closely followed by sophomore Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) and Rob Cabrera (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.). Closs also swam to a second-place finish in the 100-breast followed by juniors Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) and Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.), in fourth and sixth respectively.
On the boards, sophomore Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) won the 3-meter (277.05) board and sophomore Jason Eccleston (Reisterstown, Md.) won the 1-meter (261.75) board.
The Terps return to ACC action next Saturday against Miami and Duke. The meet begins at 2 p.m. at the Campus Recreation Center.
