Maryland won its third straight game 88-56 over first time opponent Nicholls State Sunday afternoon at Comcast Center. The 32 point margin is the largest of the season to date for the Terps. It was the 23rd consecutive non-conference win for the Terps at Comcast Center.
The Terps turned the heat up early forcing five turnovers and blocking a shot to take a 15-7 lead five minutes into the game. Maryland hit seven of its first 10 shots in the stretch, including six early points by Ekene Ibekwe.
Nicholls State got its first nine points from junior Stefan Blaszczynski who finished the game as the Colonels leading scorer with 20 points.
Stating point guard D.J. Strawberry dished three assists in the opening minutes and eclipsed his previous career best, tallying seven assists by halftime. Strawberry finished the game with a new career-high of 12 assists.
The 12 assists by Strawberry are the most by a Terp since John Gilchrist recorded 10 on 2/8/05 against VA Tech. It is the first time a Maryland player recorded 12 assists since Steve Blake did so on 1/4/03 against Wagner. The junior did not turn the ball over during the game.
By adding 12 points to his 12 assists, Strawberry recorded the first double-double of the young season.
Nik Caner-Medley scored seven straight points to fuel a 9-2 run that extended the Maryland lead into double digits, 29-13 at the mid point of the first half. Caner-Medley finished the game with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Colonels reserve Ryan Bathie knocked down his first three attempts from deep in just 2:30, helping bring Nicholls State back within seven points, 31-24. Bathie finished the game with 12 points, all from 3-point shooting.
11 of the 17 first-half field goals scored by Maryland came by layup or dunk.
Maryland forced 11 first half turnovers, resulting in a 16-2 advantage in points off turnovers. The Maryland edge grew to 34-2 by the end of the game.
Maryland committed just 3 second half turnovers. For the game, the 8 turnovers are a Terrapin season low. With 21 team assists, the assist-to-turnover ratio for the season is now 94:77.
Maryland started the second half hitting seven of its first 11 shots to fuel a 16-0 run. Ekene Ibekwe put in nine of the 16 points.
The Terps held Nicholls State to just 11.1% from deep in the second half while shooting 60% on treys themselves.
Maryland leading scorer Chris McCray was 4-5 from deep, including hitting all three second half attempts. McCray hit the 20 point mark for the first time this season also finishing with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. McCray reached the 20 point plateau five times last season.
Travis Garrison added eight points to his season high eight rebounds in just 16 minutes on the floor. Garrison is averaging 7.3 rpg over the last three games.
Terps forward James Gist finished with a career-high five blocks.
At least four Terps have scored in double figures in all five contests this season.
The Terps outrebounded the Colonels by 17, a Maryland season high for rebounding margin.
The Terps went 5-10 from beyond the arc, raising their season average to 43.7%.
Maryland has now forced a season-high 21 turnovers in back-to-back games.
The 32 point victory spreads the Maryland average margin of victory to 25 points per game this season.
