After an 11-day layoff from competition, the No. 16 Maryland men's basketball team defeated the American Eagles 81-55 Friday evening at the Comcast Center. Maryland moves to 8-2 overall while American drops to 3-7.
The Terps now lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 13-1.
The Terps are a perfect 6-0 at Comcast Center this season and have won 27 straight non-conference home games dating back to last season. Under head coach Gary Williams, Maryland is now 113-2 in non-conference home games.
Williams improved to 342-180 at Maryland and is now just seven wins shy of become the program's all-time winningest coach. Charles "Lefty" Driesell is currently at the top of the list with 348.
Chris McCray moved into 40th place on the school's all-time scoring list. He passes Terp great Len Elmore (1,017 points from 1972-74).
Nik Caner-Medley moved into 28th place on Maryland's all-time scoring list. He passes Larry Gibson (1,198 points from 1976-79).
Caner-Medley also moves into 15th place on the career steals list with 120.
McCray reached double digits in scoring (17) for the 12th consecutive game, dating back to last season.
American managed only 55 points, a season-low for a Terp opponent.
Maryland's defense forced four turnovers on American's first five possessions to start the game. The Terps caused six turnovers in the opening four minutes, and allowed only four points in the first eight-and-a-half minutes (2-of-10 FGs).
Ekene Ibekwe and Caner-Medley combined to score the team's first 10 points.
