The No. 17/21 Maryland men's basketball team defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts, 87-57, Wednesday at the Comcast Center. The Terps, who have won five of the last six games, improve to 6-2 on the year while the Catamounts drop to 5-6.
Maryland moves to 2-0 in the all-time series with Western Carolina.
The Terps are a perfect 4-0 at Comcast Center this season and have won 25 straight non-conference home games dating back to last season. Under head coach Gary Williams, Maryland is now 112-2 in non-conference home games.
Williams improved to 340-180 at Maryland and is now just nine wins shy of become the program's all-time winningest coach. Charles "Lefty" Driesell is currently at the top of the list with 348.
Senior co-captain Chris McCray was not in the lineup for Head Coach Gary Williams, snapping a streak of 25 consecutive starts. The last game he missed prior to tonight's was Jan. 15, 2005 against Temple.
McCray was replaced in the starting lineup by junior guard Mike Jones, who was making his fifth career start.
Senior Nik Caner-Medley reached several individual milestones tonight. With eight points, he moved into 29th place on the Terp' all-time scoring list. He passes Obinna Ekezie, who scored 1,172 points from 1996-99. He also reached the 500-rebound plateau for his career after recording 10 boards.
Caner-Medley becomes the 34th Terp to grab 500 rebounds for his career, and just the 26th to record 1,000 and 500 rebounds. Prior to tonight, the last two Terps to join the 500 rebound-1,000 point were Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter who did so in 2002.
Caner-Medley also becomes the 11th player in program history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 steals.
Williams' starting lineup of Jones, Caner-Medley, D.J. Strawberry, Travis Garrison and Ekene Ibekwe was the third different one he has used in eight games this season.
Maryland's first 16 points were scored by the frontcourt, including eight by Garrison.
Garrison recorded his second double-double of the season (and seventh of his career) before halftime, tallying 16 points and 14 rebounds in the first half. He finished the game with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 14 boards.
Over his last three games Garrison is averaging 11.3 rebounds per game. Tonight marks the fifth straight game he has led the squad in rebounds.
With two blocks tonight, Garrison slides past Ibekwe for ninth on the career blocks list with 110.
Junior forward Gini Chukura scored the first points of his career on a putback late in the second half.
Every player who saw action for Maryland scored and recorded at least one rebound.
Maryland outrebounded the Catamounts, 49-20. It marks the sixth time this year the Terps have outrebounded an opponent.
