ATLANTA - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team took two conference titles and remains in the lead after the second day of competition at the ACC Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The No. 12 Terps have 238 points, followed by defending ACC champion Virginia (217) and North Carolina (156).
Senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) became the first Terp to win an individual title at the meet, as she took home the crown in the 200-yard individual medley. Mulyayeva's time of 2:00.78 set a new pool mark and was an NCAA `B' cut.
Just a day after taking both the 800-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay, the Terrapins added another relay title, winning the 200-free relay. The team of seniors Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) and Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.), freshman Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.) and Mulyayeva clocked a `B' cut time of 1:31.84, a pool record.
Senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships next month with her time of 4:44.54 in the 500-free, finishing second in the event. The time is her personal best. Senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) placed third with a `B' cut time of 4:45.88, also a career best.
The Terps' 50-free trio of Weir, Walter and Knepper placed fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively. Weir (23.34) and Walter (23.35) both achieved `B' cuts. Knepper finished in 23.62.
Other Terrapins in action tonight included sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), who finished 10th in the 500-free (4:52.27); freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.), who placed 18th in the 500-free (4:53.72); freshman Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel), who finished 19th in the 500-free (4:54.35); junior Inbal Levavi (Kibbutz Givat Haim, Israel), who finished 10th in the 200-IM (2:04.47); and junior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who placed 17th in the 50-free (23.91).
