
Maryland Swimmers Look To Wrap Up ACC Title Tonight

ATLANTA - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team will try to lock up the ACC championship Saturday night on the fourth and final day of competition at the conference title meet. Five Terps finished among the top eight at this morning's preliminaries and will compete for crowns at tonight's finals.
Senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) leads the way, taking the top seed in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 1:59.27 is an NCAA `B' cut and a new Georgia Tech Aquatic Center record.
The Terps placed three swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle finals. Senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) will go for her second individual title after winning the 200-free Friday night. She is the second seed after being edged out by .01 seconds by Virginia Tech's Mason Walsh. Miller's time of 49.99 is an NCAA `B' standard. She will be joined in the finals by senior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) and sophomore Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.), who are seeded sixth and eighth, respectively. Weir (50.91) and Walter (51.07) both posted `B' cuts in the prelims.
Junior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) is the second seed in the 200-yard breaststroke. She also achieved a `B' cut with her time of 2:16.12.
Freshman Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel) will swim in tonight's 100-free consolations, while junior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will compete in the bonus consols in the event. Junior Inbal Levavi (Kibbutz Givat Haim, Israel) and senior Caitlin Gannon (Evans City, Pa.) will compete in the consolation round in the 200-back, and freshman Atalie Abranovic (Kittanning, Pa.) will swim in the bonus consols in the 200-breast. Freshman Stacie Lesneski (Gardner, Mass.) and sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) will compete in the 200-yard butterfly consolations, while freshman Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) will swim in the bonus consols in the event.
The 12th-ranked Terps are currently in first place with 469 points. They won ACC titles in 200-free, the 100-fly, the 200- and 400-IM, the 200- and 800-free relay and the 200-and 400-medley relay, breaking a number of records. The finals begin tonight at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The session will include the 400-free relay, as well as the finals for the 1,650-free, 200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly and platform diving. Follow the meet with Livestats.
