College Park, Md. - Maryland goalie Harry Alford stopped 25 Georgetown shots to lead the fourth ranked Terrapin men's lacrosse over the No. 5 Hoyas, 13-6, Saturday afternoon before an overflowing capacity crowd at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

Making his first career start Alford, a sophomore from Washington, D.C., allowed only three goals through three quarters and made 10 saves in the fourth quarter alone.

Offensively Maryland showed a balanced attack that saw 11 different Terps score goals on the afternoon. Leading the way was junior All-American midfielder Bill McGlone with three goals to extend his goal scoring streak to 17, dating back to last season.

No other Terps scored more than one goal, but national player of the year candidate Joe Walters scored a goal to extend his goal scoring streak to 17. The junior attackman also added four assists for a five-point game, the seventh game of his stellar career with at least five points.

Other Terps with multiple-point games off of one goal and an assist were junior All-American Brendan Healy, senior attackman Dave Matz and sophomore attackman Michael Phipps.

The catalyst for the Maryland offense proved to be face-off specialist David Tamberrino, who won eight of the 11 draws that he took during the game. The junior also contributed four groundballs.

Two Terps scored in their first-ever games for Maryland. Freshman Will Dalton from Queenstown, Md., scored at the 6:03 mark of the first quarter off an assist from Walters to give Maryland a 3-1 lead. Sophomore James Borell, a transfer from Air Force, scored at 4:20 in the third to cap off a 7-1 scoring blitz for the Terps.

The Maryland defense, which was a question mark heading into this season, stifled the Hoya attack and didn't allow Georgetown clear looks at the goal. Sophomore Steve Whittenberg, a transfer from Air Force playing in his first game for the Terps, picked up a four groundballs and caused a turnover.

For the Hoyas, Trevor Casey and Sean Denihan each scored a pair of goals, while All-American defender Brodie Merrill picked up a game-high 11 groundballs, caused four turnovers and added an assist.

The Terps return to action next Saturday in an ACC game vs. No. 13 Duke. The Blue Devils defeated UMBC, 12-10, in Durham, N.C. on Saturday afternoon.
