Dickerson Tabbed Head Basketball Coach At Tulane

April 1, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's associate head men's basketball coach Dave Dickerson (Maryland `90) has been hired as the head basketball coach at Tulane University in New Orleans, the university announced today. Dickerson, a varsity letterwinner from 1986-89 and a former Terrapin team captain, is the 13th former assistant coach under Terrapin mentor Gary Williams to go on to lead his own program.

"Dave has been a great assistant and a great friend for nine years," said Williams. "He has served his University well, and brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and a great work ethic to the head coaching position at Tulane."

Dickerson, a member of Williams' staff since 1996 that was promoted to Maryland's Associate Head Coach in April of 2004, has been one of the country's most accomplished assistants for the last nine seasons. Accolades for Dickerson have included his recognition as an AFLAC Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003, a 2004-05 Athlon Sports national Top 10 assistant coach, the Basketball News No. 1 assistant coach in the ACC (2003-04), Athlon Sports' No. 4 assistant coach in the nation (2003-04), and an "Assistant Coach on the Rise" as noted by ESPN's Andy Katz (2003-04).

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to become a head coach at a great University like Tulane, but at the same time, this is a bittersweet moment for me," said Dickerson. "I have mixed emotions about leaving my alma mater and Coach Williams, who has been a great mentor for me. It has been tremendous to have been a part of nine successful seasons at the University of Maryland."

Dickerson has built a solid reputation as a recruiter and mentor. His nine seasons on the Terp sideline have included eight NCAA Tournament berths, five Sweet Sixteen appearances, two trips to the Final Four and Maryland's first-ever national championship in 2002. He also helped lead the Terps to the 2004 ACC Tournament title and the regular-season crown in 2002.

As Maryland's top recruiter for the past several years, Dickerson helped land Top 10 recruiting classes in 1997 and 1998, the fourth-rated class in the nation in 2002 and the country's No. 2 class in 2003. Dickerson has recruited and coached two NBA lottery picks and four total first round selections.

Dickerson has been an assistant coach for 15 seasons overall, with stints at Gardner-Webb, James Madison and Radford prior to the return to his alma mater. His career includes 15-straight winning seasons, and 10 postseason appearances.
