Final Stats
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland baseball scored eight runs in the first inning and 13 runs over the game's first three innings on its way to a 17-2 win over Coppin State on Tuesday night. Eight different Terps scored runs and had RBI, led by Matt Maropis, Truan Mehl and Jordan Wilson, who each scored three runs in the game. The Terps will try and carry the momentum from their biggest win of the season into a road game tomorrow at UMBC (7 p.m.).
Wilson finished the day a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-5 with three RBI, three runs and a solo home run. Wilson now has multi-hit games in five of his last games and has seven RBI over his last three. Over the weekend, the junior first baseman drove in three runs to tie a career high in the team's 13-3 win over Duke, and then tied that mark for the fourth time this season tonight.
Matt Maropis hit the first of two Maryland home runs, connecting on a long three-run shot off Matt Bellon in the first inning. Maropis had two hits in the game, scored three runs and stole two bases - his ninth and 10th of the season.
Dan Melvin had three hits and tied a career-high with three runs batted in, and Truan Mehl continued his hot hitting with three hits, three runs and two RBI.
Eight runs in the first proved to be plenty of support, as a trio of freshman pitchers combined to hold Coppin State to two hits and two runs in the game. Right-hander Ryan Moorer earned his first career win with 5.0 innings of two-hit ball, and Brett Jones and Brett Tidball held the Eagles hitless over a combined 4.0 shutout innings to close the game. Jones gave up just two walks in 3.0 innings, and Tidball worked a hitless ninth to close out the game.
The Maryland bats got rolling early, stringing together five hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches to score eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Wilson, Dan Melvin and Jason Von Behren had RBI singles, and Matt Maropis hit a three-run homer to lead the Maryland scoring. Elliot Singletary walked twice, and Will Frazier was hit by two pitches before Jordan Wilson grounded out to end the inning.
Truan Mehl, Jordan Wilson, Dan Melvin and Chad Durakis all had RBI base hits in the bottom of the third, as the Terrapin offense added five more runs to take a quick 13-0 lead. Brian Jarosinski also scored a run with an RBI groundout, and, after leading the inning off with a walk, Matt Maropis stole two bases and scored a run on an RBI single by Mehl.
After Coppin State got on the board with two runs in the fourth, Ryan Moorer and the Maryland pitching staff held the Eagles scoreless over the next five innings. The Maryland offense tacked on runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings on its way to the program's most lopsided victory since a 21-4 win over UMBC on March 10th of last year.
The Terps take on UMBC in the decisive game of a three-game series tomorrow at 7 p.m. UMBC used a ninth-inning home run to come away with an 9-7 win over Maryland at Shipley Field earlier this month, and Maryland took an 8-6 decision over the Retrievers on March 29.
