Maryland Madness Opens Basketball Season

Sept. 23, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland Madness and the 2005-2006 basketball season are just days away.

Maryland Madness festivities are planned for Friday evening, Oct. 14, with doors at Comcast Center opening at 6:30 p.m. Fans are invited to join coaches Gary Williams and Brenda Frese and the "Voice of the Terps" Johnny Holliday, as Maryland ushers in the season with a night of giveaways, special performances, a laser-light show and intrasquad scrimmages.

Free t-shirts will be given to the first 5,000 students in attendance.

Due to the easing of an NCAA regulation, the teams no longer have to wait until midnight to begin their first practice. This year's event will tip off at 8 p.m., giving students and fans an early glimpse of the new teams.

"Starting earlier gives more fans the opportunity to come out to Comcast Center and enables our team to be fresh for its first full practice the following day," said Williams. "We're going to give fans a great show."

"Maryland Madness is always a terrific event," added Frese. "Our team is looking forward to being part of the celebration and seeing many of our great fans."

The festivities feature the annual men's basketball alumni game, performances by the Maryland Gymkana Troupe, the Terrapin Spirit Squad, the Varsity Competitive Cheer Team, the Maryland Dance Team and Maryland Band. After the lights go down and the teams are introduced, the men's and women's squads will hold their first Red/White scrimmages of the year.

SAAC CANNED FOOD DRIVE
Fans are encouraged to bring canned food items as a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank. Drop locations will be situated inside the Comcast Center entrances, manned by members of Maryland's Student Athletic Advisory Council and staff from the Terps' Academic Support and Career Development unit. Fans donating a canned food item will receive a voucher for a free small popcorn, courtesy of University Dining Services (while supplies last).
