COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Ramona But and Marianne Baker each won their singles and doubles matchups, and freshman newcomer Michael Amir scored a three-set singles win in the clinching match to lift No. 39 Maryland past 29th-ranked Texas A&M, 4-3, in a women's tennis match played Sunday at The Tennis Center at College Park.
The Terrapins evened their dual-match record at 1-1, splitting their matches to open the schedule. The Terps lost to No. 13 Kentucky on Friday afternoon. The Aggies fell to 0-2 on the year.
Amir, a freshman from Jerusalem, Israel, who joined the Terrapins for the spring semester, won a three-set match at the No. 6 singles pairing. Her 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Marisa Druss broke a 3-3 tie and gave Maryland the match-clinching point.
Maryland won the doubles point, as But and Baker earned an 8-4 victory in the top pairing, and Neda Mihneva and Julia Graca combined for an 8-3 win in the third match. But and Baker are ranked 16th in the nation as a doubles team this week and defeated the Aggies' pairing of Anna Lubinsky and Sarah Foster, which was ranked 29th.
But took a 7-6 (12-10), 6-4 victory over Lubinsky in the No. 1 singles pairing, and Baker rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Foster at No. 2. But Texas A&M controlled the third, fourth and fifth singles matchups to tie the match, setting the stage for Amir's decisive three-set win.
Maryland hosts South Carolina on Friday afternoon and Michigan next Sunday morning.
