COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's basketball team was among the 51 teams receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll, released today (October 27). The Terrapins, who return eight letterwinners and four starters from last year, were among the teams receiving votes outside the Top 25.
Maryland is scheduled to face four teams ranked in the preseason Top 25. The Terps could also face a fifth team, Texas, if the two meet during the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic. Maryland will also face Illinois, Florida State, and Winthrop, who each received votes outside the Top 25.
The Atlantic Coast Conference placed four teams in the Top 25, led by North Carolina, which was selected No. 2 behind top-ranked Florida. The Tar Heels will visit College Park on February 25 for the only scheduled meeting of the season between the two schools.
The Terps will host their final public scrimmage on Saturday, October 28 at 3:30 p.m. Maryland plays its first exhibition contest of the season on November 1, when the Terrapins take on California (Pa.) at 8:00 p.m. The Terrapins open the 2006-07 regular season on November 7 when they take on Hampton in the opening round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.
