Last Friday, September 29, the University of Maryland Swimming and Diving team competed in the Red/Black Intrasquad Meet. The event served as the first opportunity this season for the Maryland swimmers to race competitively in their primary stroke.
The team was divided into two squads, red and black. There was definitely a sense of energy and excitement about the team Friday afternoon as each team came covered with face paint and other decorations to support the squad they were representing. In the end, the red team was victorious by a narrow margin of less than 10 points. The close final standings between the two teams added to the enthusiasm and the competitiveness that defined the event.
The individual events were limited to a 150-yard race in each stroke and a 300-yard race in the Individual Medley. These non-traditional times were meant to force the swimmers to be aggressive, and the swimmers responded positively.
According to head coach Dave Durden, "The Intrasquad meet went extremely well. One of the highlights included Nina Rossi's 150-yard butterfly. It was also encouraging to see Sasha Malanina be victorious in both the 300 IM and 150 breaststroke with only a one minute rest between races. I saw that many of our athletes seem to be swimming up to par and are on track so far this season."
The team will return to action in a home Time Trial Meet at 10:00am this Saturday, October 7 in the Campus Recreation Center.
