COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Freshman Landon Milbourne scored 14 points, newcomer Bambale Osby added 11, and Maryland earned a 79-78 exhibition victory over California University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday night.

Will Bowers and D.J. Strawberry had 10 points apiece for the Terrapins, who committed 17 turnovers. Maryland never trailed in the second half, but the Terrapins held on after a nine-point halftime lead was cut to 71-70 with 2:33 left.

Milbourne followed with a 3-pointer. After a turnover by the Vulcans, James Gist scored on a dunk for a six-point cushion.

California got within a point before Maryland freshman Eric Hayes sank two free throws with 4 seconds left to make it 78-75. The Vulcans followed with their 23rd turnover, and Gist added a foul shot.

Kelvin Green scored 22 points for California, a Division II school from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Vulcans played inspired basketball for coach Bill Brown, who missed the final 11 games last season while being treated for complications with diabetes.

Maryland played without highly touted freshman point guard Greivis Vasquez, who sat out with a sprained left ankle. Hayes and senior Parrish Brown shared most of the work at the point; Hayes finished with nine assists and Brown had seven points and one assist.

Osby, a junior college transfer, scored all his points in only 11 minutes of playing time.

Maryland took 43-34 lead at halftime. Nine different players scored for the Terrapins, but the key was a defense that forced 16 turnovers.

After Gist made the first basket of the game, the Vulcans scored 10 straight points - half of them by Green.
