COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -Ekene Ibekwe scored 16 points, James Gist and D.J. Strawberry each had 15, and No. 25 Maryland pulled away in the second half to beat High Point 81-63 Friday.
Freshman Greivis Vasquez added 11 points for the Terrapins, who never trailed in the game. Maryland went 6-for-12 from 3-point range and outscored the Panthers 19-2 at the line in improving to 7-0 for the first time since 1998.
Arizona Reid scored 19 points on 9-for-17 shooting and Mike Jefferson added 16 for High Point (3-3). Reid, who had a team-high five rebounds, fouled out with 7:28 left.
Maryland opened the second half with a 9-2 run to expand its 37-33 halftime edge to 46-35. Four different players scored in the surge, which provided the Terrapins with a double-digit lead for the first time since it was 25-15.
It was 52-43 when Reid picked up his fourth foul with 13:17 remaining. After Landon Quick scored for the Panthers, Maryland guard Parrish Brown made a 3-pointer, followed his own miss with a layup and tossed an alley-oop pass to Strawberry to make it 59-45.
Vasquez then made two free throws for a 16-point lead with 11 minutes to go.
Maryland outscored the Panthers 7-0 at the line in the first half, but Reid scored 15 points and High Point went 5-for-12 from 3-point range to keep it close.
The Panthers had three turnovers and missed three shots in falling behind 5-0 at the outset. Minutes later, a follow-dunk by Gist and a 3-pointer by Strawberry sparked a 9-0 run that put Maryland up 23-11.
Reid then made a pair of baskets in a 9-2 spurt that got the Panthers to 25-20, forcing Terps coach Gary Williams to call a timeout. Maryland upped the margin to 8 points before 3-pointers by High Point's Eugene Harris and Troy Bowen made it 33-31.
