
Terps Defeat ACC Foes Duke and NC State

The Maryland women's swimming and diving team was victorious over Duke (155-132) and NC State (171-119) in Saturday's tri-meet held in Durham, N.C. The women's team now holds a 3-0 overall record and 2-0 record in the ACC.
The women opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados), junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.), senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) won the event with a 1:46.99. The Terps also won the 200-yard freestyle relay with Skalinskaya, junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel), freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.), and Smoak finishing with an NCAA B cut time of 1:33.00.
Skalinskaya took the 50 free (24.06) followed by Finkler in second (24.46). Senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) also swam the 50 free finishing in sixth place. Skalinskaya went on to win the 100 free (51.64) with Smoak in fourth and Laputka in fifth.
Lehner led the way in the 1000 free, taking first place with a time of 10:13.67. Junior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) followed in sixth place. Lehner also took the 200 free with an NCAA B cut time of 1:49.65 and junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) finished in third place (1:55.28). Lehner picked up her third win of the day in the 500 free (5:00.01) with Jones in third.
Freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Terps in the 100 backstroke in second place (58.01) followed by Ferdinand who came in third (59.48). Davidson went on to place second in the 200 back (2:07.54). Freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished fifth and freshman Patty DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) came in seventh.
In the 100 butterfly, Broome took third place (57.74) and deToll came in sixth. Maryland swept the 200 butterfly with freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) placing first (2:03.54), Broome in second (2:05.78), and Descenza placing fourth in the event (2:07.59). Rossi went on to swim to her second first-place finish of the day in the 200 individual medley (2:08.35) followed by Jones in sixth.
In the 100 breaststroke, Smoak swam to a second-place finish (1:07.15) with Csomova and freshman Cindy Gangloff (Akron, Ohio) placing fifth and ninth respectively. Rossi swam to a second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:21.34) followed by Csomova in third and Gangloff in ninth.
The Terps will return to action November 16-18 in the Terrapin Cup Invitational held at the Eppley Recreation Center. Thursday, November 16 marks the first day of the Invitational and preliminary events will begin at 10:00 am.
