RICHMOND, Va. -
No. 31 Maryland lost Sunday against No. 34 Virginia Commonwealth, 7-0. The Terps now stand at 4-3 on the season.
Neda Mihneva and Julia Graca were the lone bright spot for the Terps, pulling out a tough 7-6 (4) win playing in the third doubles position. Ramona But and Marianne Baker were 6-0 at the first doubles slot heading into today's match, but fell 8-2 to VCU's Yuferova and Borisova. Jennifer Dent and Michal Amir dropped their match at the second doubles position, 8-3, giving VCU the doubles point.
VCU proved too powerful for the Terps in singles, taking all six matches. After dropping the first set, But forced VCU's Uvarova to a decisive third set, but was unable to pull out the victory. Baker and Veronika Subertova also put up good fights, pushing their respective opponents to tie-breakers, before falling in straight sets.
Maryland returns to action next weekend, hosting Pennsylvania on Saturday and Old Dominion on Sunday at the Tennis Center at College Park.
