Terps Gear Up for Senior Day vs. UVA

Feb. 3, 2006

College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins swimming and diving teams wraps up their regular season schedules on Saturday afternoon when they face the Virginia Cavaliers at the Natatorium of the Campus Recreation Center in College Park. The meet marks Senior Day for seven Terrapin swimmers, although they will be back at the CRC later this month as Maryland hosts the ACC Championships.

Last week, the men's and women's teams both fell to North Carolina by scores of 187-105 and 175-115, respectively. There were bright spots, though, as the women's 200 medley relay team won for the third straight week. The team consisted of senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), junior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.), and freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan). They finished in 1:44.38 for the victory.

Meanwhile on the men's side, Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) sprinted out to the victory in the 50 free. He finished in 20.51. Gray earned his second victory a few events later, when he held off Carolina's Casey Kott (46.76) to win the 100 free in 46.38.

Senior Profiles

Patrick Doyle

A dependable swimmer, Patrick has had some of his best moments in Maryland's biggest meets. He was part of a Maryland record-setting 800 freestyle relay team in last year's ACC Championships. A career-best performance in the 100 free and a first place finish in the 200 free at last year's Terrapin Cup helped lead the Terps to victory. The native of Norfolk, Va. participated in this year's U.S. Open in Auburn, Ala, where he swam the 200 and 400-meter free to personal best times.

Andrew Foran

Andrew made his presence known immediately when he swam what were then career best times in the 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM at the ACC Championships his freshman year. The next year, he earned his first individual victory against N.C. State in the 200 fly. A native of Atascadero, Calif., Andrew achieved his career best time in the 100 fly earlier this season when he finished in 53:13 against Johns Hopkins and Howard.

Krisztina Kovacs

Krisztina was a key member of last year's ACC Championship team, and qualified for the NCAAs in the 100 and 200 breast events. Her career-best time in the 200 breast came in the ACC Championships, where she finished second. She has already posted B-cut qualifying times in both events again this season. Krisztina has been a key member of the dominant 200 medley relay team this year, which has placed first in each of the team's last three meets.

Inbal Levavi

Inbal took the ACC by storm in her freshman season, when she was an All-ACC selection and honorable mention All-American. She swam in four events at that year's NCAA Championships - the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 back, and the 800 free relay team, with which she helped set a school record. The native of Kibutz Givat Haim, Israel has remained one of the Terps' steadiest presences, finishing sixth in the 400 IM at last year's successful ACC Championship.

Erik Putkonen

One of the Terps' top backstrokers, Erik established his career-best time in the 100 back as a sophomore when he swam to a time of 50:91 in the ACC Championships. In his junior year, Erik again found himself saving his career bests for the conference championship, where he established new top times in the 200 back and 500 free. This year, the native of Marietta, Ga. posted one of the team's best times of the year in the 200 back when he finished 13th in the Terrapin Cup.

Chris Starr

Chris has been a strong presence on the Terrapin swimming and diving team throughout his time at Maryland. In last season's ACC Championships, Chris set career bests with his performances in the 200 free and 200 back. One of the more versatile swimmers on the team, the native of Ellicott City, Md. competes in freestyle, IM, back, and relay events. His top time in the 200 IM came in the ACC Championships his sophomore year.

Barbara Sumrall

Barbara was an All-ACC selection her freshman year, when she helped the 400 medley relay team earn a victory in the conference championship. Last year, she swam to a 7th place finish in the 100 fly as the women were on their way to an ACC Championship. This season, she has been a member of the 200 medley relay team, which has won in each of the last three meets.

The meet begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Natatorium of the Campus Recreation Center.
