DURHAM, N.C. -
The 37th ranked Maryland Women's Tennis Team fell to 12th ranked Duke, 4-3 in Durham, NC on Sunday. The loss dropped the Terps to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in the ACC.
In the doubles matches, Maryland started strong, winning the doubles point. #13 Marianne Baker and Ramona But defeated their opponents, 8-6. Third doubles Julia Graca and Neda Mihneva also came out on top, 9-7.
Playing first in the singles sets for Maryland was #59 But. In a tough first set, But fell to #2 Daniela Bercek. But also fell in the second set, 6-2. The loss left the match tied at 1-1.
#91 Baker played second for the Terps, falling to #29 Jackie Carleton in three sets. Carleton took the first set, 6-3, but Baker answered back, taking the second, 6-4. However, Carleton proved to be too strong for Baker, taking the third set, 6-1, and the victory, giving the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead.
#122 Melissa Mang of Duke faced Jennifer Dent in the third singles, with Dent falling, 6-3, 6-1, as Duke extended its lead to 4-1. Veronika Subertova played fourth for Maryland, falling to #66 Tara Iyer, 6-2, 6-2.
Maryland rebounded to win the last two singles matches. Mihneva playing fifth for the Terrapins, quickly took the match, 6-2, 6-1. Michal Amir finished out for the Terps, defeating her opponent, 6-1, 6-0, to make the final score 4-3 Blue Devils.
The women will be back at home to face North Carolina State on Friday, April 7.
