GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four Maryland baseball players were selected to the 2006 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Baseball team, Commissioner John Swofford announced yesterday. Seniors Matt Maropis, Seth Overbey and Ben Pfinsgraff were honored by the league along with sophomore Chad Durakis.
All 12 league schools competing in baseball are represented on the inaugural team with Clemson leading all schools with seven honorees. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Overbey, who went 5-2 with two saves and a 3.49 ERA last year, set a school record with 29 appearances on the mound. He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 15th round and is currently pitching for the Auburn Doubledays of the New York Penn League (Class A).
A right-hander from Annapolis, Pfinsgraff finished his Terrapin career with an 11-15 mark and 4.56 ERA. Chosen in the 22nd round by the Philadelphia Phillies, he is now playing with the Batavia Muckdogs (also of the NY Penn League).
In 2006, Maropis led the Terps with 19 stolen bases and finished second on the club with a .320 batting average. He also moved into third place on the school's all-time steals list with 54.
The lone underclassman to earn All-Academic honors for Maryland, Durakis started 52 games at catcher last season, hitting .267 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBI. He also led the Terps with a .309 average in ACC action.
