The Maryland women's swimming and diving team is set to travel to Blacksburg, Va. this weekend for a meet against Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. The Terrapins are coming off of two wins against Villanova and Richmond; Maryland also finished behind Pittsburgh last week when Maryland hosted the three teams in a quad meet for Senior Weekend.
The women's team now holds a 5-2 overall season record. This weekend's meet marks the second time this year for the Terps to face ACC teams. Maryland holds a 2-0 conference record after winning an away meet against Duke and NC State in November. The Terps currently sit in fourth place on the women's side in the ACC.
Maryland is led by freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.). After last weekend's competition, Lehner is ranked in the ACC's top ten for eight events. Lehner is second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.37), fourth in the 200 free (1:49.65), ninth in the 500 free (4:54.94), 10th in the 1000 free (10:11.37), seventh in the 1650 free (16:48.97), fourth in the 100 backstroke (56.31), fourth in the 200 back (2:00.39) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:03.73). Lehner has swam NCAA B-cut times in the 100 free, 200 free, 1650 free, 200 back and 200 IM.
Also ranked in the ACC after last weekend's meet is sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan). Skalinskaya is ninth in the 50 free (23.52) and sixth in the 100 free with an NCAA B-cut time of 50.83. Freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) is currently seventh in the ACC for the 100 butterfly (56.18) and sixth in the 200 fly with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:01.91. Freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) also made the ACC top ten for the 200 fly, coming in 9th (2:03.54). Senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) sits in second for the 400 individual medley with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:21.37.
The Terps will face Virginia Tech (fifth in the ACC) and Georgia Tech (eighth in the ACC) for the first time this season. Last year, during regular season, Maryland defeated Georgia Tech but finished behind Virginia Tech in an ACC quad meet (also with Florida State) to open the season at home. Virginia Tech holds a 6-2 overall record and 2-1 conference record this season. The Hokies are coming off of a win against East Carolina last weekend. Georgia Tech is currently 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference this season. The Yellow Jackets picked up three wins against North Florida, New Orleans and Emory last week, while also suffering a loss against Florida Atlantic.
The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20th at Virginia Tech's War Memorial Pool.
