Maryland looks for its second Atlantic Coast Conference victory when the Terrapins travel to face the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday (January 21). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum. The game can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and will be televised by Fox SportsNet. The game can be seen locally on Comcast SportsNet.
The Terps carry a mark of 15-4 (1-3 ACC) into the contest, while Virginia Tech is 13-5 (3-1 ACC). The Terrapins suffered a 103-91 defeat at Virginia on Tuesday (Jan. 16). Virginia Tech dropped a 83-73 decision at Florida State Wednesday (Jan. 17).
Maryland senior D.J. Strawberry leads the Terps with 15.3 points per game. He is 15th in the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring. Senior guard Zabian Dowdell leads the Hokies with 17.3 points per game. He is the sixth leading scorer in the ACC.
Sunday's game marks the 31st meeting between the two schools. Maryland leads the all-time series 25-5. The Terrapins won the only meeting between the two schools last year, posting a 81-72 victory in College Park.
Maryland has displayed a balanced offensive attack this season. The Terps boast the thirdhighest scoring average in the league (81.6 ppg), and have four players averaging double figures.
Strawberry leads the team with 15.3 points per game. Mike Jones is averaging 13.8 points per game, while James Gist has tallied 11.6 points per game. Ekene Ibekwe is averaging 11.7 points.
Jones has led the team in scoring eight times this season, while Strawberry has led the team in scoring on seven occasions. Ibekwe has led the Terps in the scoring column in four games this season.
Maryland has outscored its opponents by an average of 15.6 points per game this season. That is the third best scoring margin in the ACC behind North Carolina (22.1) and Georgia Tech (16.6).
All five Maryland starters scored in double figures, but the Terrapins fell at Virginia, 103-91, on Tuesday (Jan. 16). The Terps trailed by 20 points (50-30) in the first half but cut the lead to three (56-53) with 15:26 to play, but the Cavaliers used a 14-2 run to surge ahead.
Senior Ekene Ibekwe recorded his fifth double-double of the season
against Virginia. He scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high 14
rebounds. Ibekwe also recorded three blocked shots against UVA.
Mike Jones led the Terps with 18 points against the Cavaliers. Jones
connected on 7-of-12 shots from the floor, including 4-of-9 from beyond the three-point line.
Junior James Gist scored in double figures for the eighth time in his last ten games as he posted 11 points against Virginia. Gist scored 10 of his 11 points in the first half and added eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a steal in 28 minutes.
Freshman Greivis Vasquez tied his career high with 17 points at
Virginia. He knocked down a personal-best five three pointers and added
four rebounds and four assists against the Cavaliers.
The Terps enjoyed a 42-30 advantage in points in the paint and
recorded 18 second chance points against Virginia.
The 2006-07 Terrapins have made their mark on the school's record
book in a variety of categories:
The Terps set school records for most three pointers (17) and three
point attempts (37) against UMKC on December 13.
Maryland's 54 free throw attempts against Hampton was the fourth
highest mark in school history. The Terps connected on 39 free throws
in that game, which was the fourth best mark in school annals.
The Terrapins 101-50 victory over UMKC was the 17th largest margin
of victory for Maryland.
Seniors Ekene Ibekwe and Mike Jones are on the cusp of joining elite company at the University of Maryland:
Jones enters Sunday's game at Virginia Tech with 974 career points and needs just 26 to reach the 1,000-point plateau. A total of 42 Terrapins have reached the prestigious milestone.
Ibekwe enters Sunday's game with 973 career points. With his 666 career rebounds, Ibekwe is looking to become just the 21st Terrapin to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. With 198 blocks to his credit he is on the verge of becoming just the fourth Terp to tally 1,000
points, 500 rebounds and 200 blocked shots, joining Lonny Baxter (1999-02), Terence Morris (1998-01) and Derrick Lewis (1985-88).
Ibekwe's 198 career blocked shots put him in position to become just the 21st player in ACC history to reach the 200-blocks plateau.
Four Terrapins are rapidly climbing the school's all-time record book. Seniors D.J. Strawberry, Ekene Ibekwe, and Mike Jones have all made their mark in the Terrapin annals, along with junior James Gist:
Strawberry ranks seventh in school history with 181 career steals. He was named Honorable Mention All-ACC Defensive Team in 2005-06.
Ibekwe sits in fifth place on the school's all-time blocked shots list. The Carson, Calif., native has 198 career rejections at Maryland and has averaged 1.7 blocked shots per game.
With 14 rebounds against Virginia, Ibekwe moved into 18th place on the school's all-time rebounding list. The senior forward has 666 career rebounds.
Ibekwe has attempted 430 career free throws and ranks 16th all-time at Maryland.
Senior Mike Jones has distinguished himself as one of the best shooters in the ACC and has rapidly moved up the school's all-time three pointers list. Jones has totaled 174 three-point field goals and sits in fifth place on the school's all-time list. Jones has hoisted 427 shots from beyond the arc, which is the seventh highest total in school history.
Gist has totaled 130 blocked shots during his three seasons in College Park. He is 10th on the school's all-time list and has averaged 1.5 blocks per game.
Freshmen Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes have each tallied 76 assists through 19 games and are well on their way to recording one of the top assist totals among freshman point guards at Maryland. They each need just 12 more helpers to pass Exree Hipp for eighth on the school's alltime
assist totals among freshmen.
Steve Blake (2000-03) owns the school record with 217 assists as a freshman in 2000.
Two Terrapins have been named the ACC Player of the Week this season. Senior Mike Jones earned the award on December 18 after scoring a career-high 27 points against UMKC. Jones set a new school recored for three pointers made (9) and tied the school mark for most three-point
attempts (13).
D.J. Strawberry earned ACC Player of the Week honors on November 20 after leading the Terps to the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Championship in New York.
Both Jones and Strawberry earned ACC Rookie of the week honors during the 2003-04 season.
Since Gary Williams took over in 1989-90, Maryland has 63 wins over Top 25 teams, including four last year. The Terps knocked off No. 14 Clemson earlier this season at Comcast Center.
Williams is the nation's winningest active coach vs. top-ranked teams with six career victories over a No. 1 opponent (5 at Maryland; 1 at Ohio State).
Under Williams, Maryland has defeated 16 top-5 opponents, 28 top-10 opponents and the No. 1 team five times.
Maryland has 13 wins over top-10 teams the last five years, including a 73-71 victory over then No. 6 Boston College during 2005-06.
The Terps have defeated at least one top-10 opponent in 13-of-17 seasons under Williams, including 10 straight.
Williams has led Terps to victories over No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 ranked-teams in six of the last eight seasons.
