The Maryland women's swimming and diving team traveled to Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday for a double-dual meet against Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. The Terrapins fell to Virginia Tech (160-77) and finished ahead of Georgia Tech (136-94) bringing the women's overall season record to 6-3 and the women's conference record to 3-1 for this season.
The Terps opened the day with a second-place swim in the 400-yard medley relay (3:51.33) by freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y), senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) and junior Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel).
Finishing the 1000 freestyle in 10:59.28 for sixth place, freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) led Maryland in the event. In the 200 free, the Terps claimed the top-two finishes with Lehner leading the meet in 1:50.75 and Finkler coming in second with her season best of 1:51.91. Lehner picked up her second win of the day in the 500 free (4:57.08).
Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) was the top finisher for Maryland in the 50 free, swimming a 24.01 for second place. Junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) and senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) swam to fifth and sixth place respectively. Skalinskaya went on to also place second in the 100 free (52.53) with Laputka finishing sixth.
Malanina led the Terps in the 200 individual medley (2:08.37) for third place, while Vogel finished in fifth (2:11.16). Malanina was also the top finisher for Maryland in the 200 breaststroke, taking fourth in 2:27.08.
The Terps dominated the 200 butterfly with Vogel winning the event in 2:06.04 and freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) taking the second-place position (2:06.46).
Junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) was the top finisher for the Terps in the 200 backstroke, taking fifth in 2:09.64 while Broome followed in sixth.
Maryland closed out the day with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:30.66) by Skalinskaya, Finkler, Smoak and Laputka.
The Terps will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. next weekend for more conference action. Maryland will compete in a dual meet against UNC on Saturday, January 27th starting at 11:00 a.m. Two weeks after this dual, Maryland will return to the same site for the ACC Women's Championships starting February 14th.
