RALEIGH, N.C. - Sophomore James Knox pinned Taylor Cummings in overtime in the final match of the day at 125 pounds to give the Maryland wrestling team a thrilling 21-18 win at NC State on January 27 at Reynolds Coliseum. The Terrapins, now 13-5 and 3-0 in the ACC, will make the short trip to Durham to take on Duke later today at 6:00 p.m.
With the Terps trailing 18-15 after nine matches, Knox couldn't have gotten his second pin of the season at a better time. He recorded his fall at 7:31 to win the crucial conference match for Maryland.
Maryland started out in a big hole as it lost the first two matches and faced a 9-0 deficit. Sophomore Alex Krom had to forfeit at 141 due to injury after Garrett Cummings won at 133 by decision.
Junior Andrew Schlaffer gave the Terps their first points of the day as he topped Joe Caramanica at 149, 3-1, to make it 9-3. The Wolfpack got those three points back as No. 19 Kody Hamrah won by decision at 157 pounds.
Senior Jason Kiessling kept his winning streak going with a 4-2 decision against Obie Simpson, 4-2, to cut the NC State lead to 12-6. Freshman Mike Letts followed suit with a 13-10 win at 174 pounds.
Jeremy Colbert recorded a fall at 184 pounds to put the Wolfpack up 18-9, but the Terps would win the final three matches for the comeback victory. Redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor picked up a big win at 197 pounds as he edged No. 13 Ryan Goodman, 5-4, to make it 18-12.
Senior Jerry Afari had the most impressive win on the day as he shocked No. 9 Jainor Palma with an 11-5 decision at heavyweight. Afari's win made the score 18-15 in favor of NC State, setting up Knox for his dramatic fall at 125 pounds.
Maryland is not done yet as it will take on Duke later today at 6:00 p.m. The match can be seen live on ACC Select.
