COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A sold out audience at the Comcast Center helped the Maryland men's and women's basketball teams usher in the 2007-08 season at Maryland Madness on October 12. Fans were treated to performances throughout the night as both teams were officially introduced to their supporters.
Festivities kicked off with the Alumni Game which featured Walt Williams, Gini Chukura, Johnny Rhodes, and current assistant coaches Keith Booth and Chuck Driesell.
Performances by the spirit squad, the competitive cheer team, the dance team, and Gymkana excited the packed house before the finals of the student slam dunk contest began.
At 9:40 p.m., the women's basketball team was introduced to the fans in attendance before Brenda Frese addressed the crowd. Following their scrimmage, the men's side was welcomed to the arena floor followed by a few remarks from Gary Williams.
The two teams will hold their first official practices on Saturday, October 13.
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee sponsored a canned food drive as part of the event as fans donated items to the Capital Area Food Bank. Members of Maryland's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and staff from the Terps' Academic Support and Career Development Unit were on hand to assist in the effort.
The men's team will host Concordia on Wednesday, November 7 in an exhibition matchup while the women will host the United States National Team team on Wednesday, October 31.
