GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Maryland basketball team was picked sixth in the 2007-08 ACC Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league media Sunday at the 46th Annual Operation Basketball at the Grandover Resort & Convention Center. North Carolina was the choice to capture the 2007-08 ACC regular-season title. Duke was picked second, followed by NC State, Clemson, and Virginia.
Head coach Gary Williams and senior James Gist (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) addressed more than 200 members of the media during the day-long event on Sunday. Both Williams and Gist met with print reporters from around the nation, as well as electronic media outlets that provide extensive coverage of college basketball.
Georgia Tech was picked seventh, one spot behind the Terrapins. Boston College, Florida State and Virginia Tech rounded out the top ten. Wake Forest was selected to finish eleventh, while Miami was picked twelfth.
North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough was named the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, while Duke's Kyle Singler was tabbed as the ACC Rookie of the Year. Hansbrough was joined on the Preseason All-ACC Team by teammate Ty Lawson, along with Sean Singletary of Virginia, Tyrese Rice of Boston College, and Brandon Costner of NC State.
The league also announced that the ACC's Faculty Athletics Representatives voted unanimously to establish the Skip Prosser Award to honor the conference's top student-athlete among the league's men's basketball players. Nominees for the Prosser Award must be in their third or fourth year of athletic competition and have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 during the last two semesters.
The Terps will host a scrimmage for Maryland students on Wednesday, October 24 at 4:00 p.m. UM plays its first exhibition contest of the season on November 7, when the Terrapins take on Concordia University at 8:00 p.m.
