COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's basketball team held its second open scrimmage on Wednesday (October 24) at Comcast Center. Head coach Gary Williams interchanged players between the red and black squads during the 40-minute scrimmage which saw an increase the offensive efficiency from the first scrimmage Saturday (October 20). The two teams combined for 172 points and shot 49 percent from the field.
Sophomore Landon Milbourne led the Terrapins with 22 points. He connected on 8 of 18 shots from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Milbourne was 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Bambale Osby scored 21 points during the scrimmage and was on the winning team in three of the four quarters.
Both teams employed full-court defense during scrimmage and worked on transition offense. The Terps knocked down 13 of 27 three-point field goals and recorded 34 assists.
James Gist and Greivis Vasquez each tallied 20 points, while freshman Adrian Bowie chipped in with 18 points and six assists. Jerome Burney recorded a team-high 11 rebounds and Dino Gregory tallied a team-best four blocked shots.
Coach Williams hosted a question and answer session with students following the scrimmage. In addition, players and coaches signed autographs and spoke with students about the upcoming season.
The Terps will host their final public scrimmage on Saturday, October 27 at 12:30 p.m. Maryland plays its first exhibition contest of the season on November 7, when the Terrapins take on Concordia University at 8:00 p.m.
Head Coach Gary Williams
His impression of the scrimmage ...
"I thought we played with more enthusiasm today, but we knew a little bit more as well. After the first seven or eight minutes the turnovers disappeared. We were careless with the ball early but that got better. It was an opportunity to mix up our lineup and I thought we did some things pretty well out there this afternoon."
On Sophomore Eric Hayes ...
"He has played really solid in both scrimmages. He's an experienced player, but at the same time, he's just played one year and I am now expecting him and Greivis to play like juniors because we need their experience."
On the leadership of the team ...
"Our veterans have done a great job of including the young guys to make them feel comfortable in the program. That's important because when you walk out on the court there can't be any distinctions about what class you're in, you're just a player."
