COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Greivis Vasquez scored 10 of Maryland's final 11 points, James Gist had 16 points and 12 rebounds in his belated season debut, and the Terrapins defeated Hampton 70-64 Monday night to advance to the semifinal round of the CBE Classic.

The Terrapins (2-0) gave up a 14-point lead in the second half before rallying behind Vasquez, who finished with 21.

Vasquez, a sophomore guard, gave Maryland the lead for good by hitting a 3-pointer with 1:17 to go. Then, after Hampton's Jordan Brooks missed two foul shots, Vasquez sank two free throws with 33 seconds left for a 67-63 lead.

With Gist leading the way, Maryland finished with a 45-29 rebounding advantage.

Rashad West scored 23 points for Hampton (1-1). Coach Kevin Nickelberry was ejected in the first half after receiving two technical fouls in the span of 61 seconds.

Maryland led 56-42 before the Pirates used a 12-3 spurt to cut the deficit to five. The Terrapins missed a chance to pull away when center Bambale Osby missed six straight free throws, and a 7-0 run pulled Hampton even for the first time since the opening tap.

After a foul shot by Vasquez put Maryland back in front, a dunk by Donte Harrison gave the Pirates their first lead. But the Terrapins outscored Hampton 8-1 the rest of the way.

Gist had 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half to help the Terrapins take a 39-29 lead.

Eager to go after sitting out Maryland's 79-50 victory over North Florida on Sunday, Gist and Milbourne immediately made their presence felt. Gist scored on a jumper with 14 seconds elapsed and Landon Milbourne made a pair of baskets before Gist added a layup for an 8-2 lead.

Over the opening five minutes, the Pirates were 1-for-6 with four turnovers.

It was 10-8 before Gist and Eric Hayes each hit a 3-pointer in an 8-point run that put the Terps up by 10.

The Pirates used the outside shooting of West to cut the deficit to 24-23, but their momentum was blunted when Nickelberry was tossed. Hayes made all four foul shots following the technical fouls, and a 3-pointer by Vasquez gave Maryland a 35-26 lead.
