The University of Maryland (3-0) takes on the UCLA Bruins (3-0) Monday night (November 19) in the first semifinal matchup of the 2007 O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. Tipoff between the Terps and Bruins is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. The game will be broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and will be televised on ESPN2.
Monday's game marks the eighth meeting between the two schools. UCLA holds a 5-2 lead in the all-time series.
The winner of the game between the Terrapins and Bruins will face the winner of Monday's second semifinal between No. 12 Michigan State and Missouri. Tuesday's championship game will tip off at 10:00 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN2, while the consolation game will start at 7:45 ET and will be televised on ESPNU.
With wins over North Florida and Hampton in the College Park Regional of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic, the Terps are now 102-38 (.724) all-time in regular season tournaments and have won 28 championships. Maryland captured the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Championship last season with a 62-60 victory over Michigan State at Madison Square Garden.
Monday's game against No. 2 UCLA marks the first time the Terps will face a ranked opponent this season. Maryland has 66 wins over ranked opponents under Gary Williams.
The Terrapins have knocked off 17 top-5 opponents under Williams and have defeated either the No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3 ranked teams in six of the last eight years.
Maryland head coach Gary Williams is the sixth-winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I men's basketball with an overall record of 588-328 (.642). He ranks second among active ACC coaches with 381 wins at Maryland (3rd overall) and also ranks second among active league coaches with 157 ACC victories. Williams is the Terps' all-time winningest coach.
Williams is just 12 wins shy of 600 career victories. Only five active head coaches in Division I have 600 career wins.
Former Maryland head coach Lefty Driesell is one of eight honorees being inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend. Driesell, along with seven others will be officially inducted as part of the Class of 2007 Sunday night.
Driesell compiled an overall record of 348-159 as head coach of the Terrapins from 1969-1986.
Over 41 seasons as a head coach, he guided four different teams (Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State) to 786 victories.
Lefty's son and former Terrapin letterman, Chuck, is in his second season as an assistant coach for Maryland.
James Gist scored a career-high 27 points as the Terrapins downed Northeastern, 74-72 in overtime Thursday at Comcast Center. The senior forward scored the Terps' first 11 points and had 14 of Maryland's 28 first-half points. The Terps limited the Huskies to just 36 percent shooting from the field for the game.
Senior Bambale Osby recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds against the Huskies. He also tallied a personal-best six blocked shots and finished 14 of 20 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Greivis Vasquez played a career-high 43 minutes against Northeastern. Vasquez scored nine points and dished out 10 assists, marking the third time in his career he handed out at least 10 assists.
Maryland blocked 12 shots against Northeastern, marking its highest output since blocking 16 shots against Mount St. Mary's on December 28, 2006.
Maryland opened the fall signing period by receiving National Letters of Intent from forward Augustus Gilchrist (Temple Hills, Md./Progressive Christian HS) and guard Sean Mosley (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy).
Gilchrist is rated the No. 14 power forward in the nation by Rivals.com. He averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots per game as a senior.
