COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Eric Hayes scored a career-high 19 points, Greivis Vasquez had 17 points and 11 assists, and Maryland pulled away to an 89-65 victory over in-state foe Morgan State on Thursday night.

Hayes, a sophomore guard, went 7-for-11 from the floor and made five 3-pointers for the Terrapins (6-3). Hayes fueled a 10-1 run that made it 57-45 with 12:48 remaining.

James Gist scored 18 to top the 1,000-mark for his career and Bambale Osby had 16 for Maryland, which opens Atlantic Coast Conference play Sunday at home against Boston College.

Reggie Holmes led the Bears (4-4) with 20 points and Jamal Holmes added 16. Morgan State is 0-5 against the Terrapins in a series that had been dormant since 1994.

The Bears lost by only four points on the road to both Connecticut and Miami, but were no match for Maryland, which was seeking to bounce back from a surprising loss to Virginia Commonwealth.

At the end of the first half, Terps coach Gary Williams threw his suit jacket onto the court and received a technical foul. It appeared as if he was protesting the no-foul ruling on a shot by Vasquez just before the final buzzer, but he might have been infuriated over the Terrapins' 13 turnovers before halftime.

Early in the second half, Hayes made two 3-pointers and Vasquez connected from beyond the arc in an 11-4 spurt that gave Maryland a 47-35 lead. The Bears responded with 7 straight points, but Hayes made a layup and a trey before Vasquez hit a short jumper to put the Terrapins up by 10.

After a Morgan State free throw, Vasquez made a 3-pointer. Minutes later, a 9-2 spree put the Terps ahead by 15.

A sloppy first half ended with Maryland up 36-29.

After the Terrapins scored the game's first 8 points, Smith made four baskets in a 13-5 surge that tied it at 13. Maryland had eight turnovers and shot 39 percent in the opening 10 minutes.

The Terrapins then took a 25-20 lead before Holmes hit a 3-pointer, Marquise Kately scored off an alley-oop pass from Smith and Gene Johnson made a layup to give Morgan State its only lead, 27-25.

Vasquez then made four straight free throws and freshman Cliff Tucker hit a 3-pointer to ignite an 11-0 run that put the Terps up 36-27.
