COLLEGE PARK, Md.- After the second day of competition in the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, Maryland women's swimming and diving is in seventh place with 119 points. North Carolina continues to lead the competition with 262 points.
Prelims:
Today's meet began with a morning session of preliminary competition in the 500-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 free. In the 500 free, junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) swam a season-best time of 5:02.92 for 26th place and an alternate position in tonight's finals.
In the 200 IM, senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) was the top finisher for Maryland with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:02.94 for a sixth-place spot in finals. Freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) qualified for the consolation finals with a 10th-place seed after swimming a season best and NCAA B-cut time of 2:03.39 in the 200 IM.
Freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) established a career best in the 200 IM this morning. Vogel swam a 2:04.95 in the event, earning a spot in the bonus consolation finals for her 18th-place finish. Also notching a position in the bonus consolation finals for the 200 IM was freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) after swimming a season-best time of 2:05.36 for a 21st-place finish.
In prelims for the 50 free, sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) earned a sixth-place seed in finals after swimming an NCAA B-cut time and season best of 23.31. Senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) notched a 20th-place finish and a spot in the bonus consolation finals after her season-best swim of 23.77 in the 50 free. Laputka's preliminary time was just 0.01 seconds away from her career best in the event.
Also qualifying for a spot in the bonus consolation finals for the 50 free was senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados) after setting a career-best time of 23.83 for a 23rd-place finish this morning. Junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) notched a career best of 24.15 in the 50 free prelims as well.
Finals:
In finals for the 200 IM, Malanina went on to finish fourth, collecting 15 points for the Terps. Malanina swam an NCAA B-cut time of 2:02.14, which is also her season best in the event. Lehner was the top finisher in the consolation final for the 200 IM, taking ninth place overall and tallying nine points for Maryland with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:01.75, which surpassed her season best in prelims.
Rossi was the top finisher in the bonus consolation final of the 200 IM establishing a new season-best time of 2:04.35 for 17th place while Vogel followed in 18th place, surpassing her career-best time set in prelims with a 2:04.70.
After swimming a season-best time for the 50 free in prelims, Skalinskaya went on to collect 11 points for the Terps with an eighth-place overall finish in the finals for the event (23.60). In the bonus consolation final for the 50 free, Laputka finished in 22nd place (23.95) and Ferdinand placed 24th (24.19) after establishing a career best this morning in the event.
The Terps closed out the second day of competition with a sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay. The squad of Lehner, Skalinskaya, Smoak and Laputka swam an NCAA B-cut time of 1:33.51 in the event.
ACC Championships for the women will continue tomorrow morning with prelims for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke starting at 11:00 a.m. Finals for these events in addition to the 400 medley relay will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Men's 1-meter diving and women's 3-meter diving competition will also be held tomorrow.
