
Malanina Second In 400 IM On Day Three Of ACCs

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- After the third day of events in the 2007 Women's Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, Maryland maintains a seventh-place standing with 228 points. North Carolina continues to lead the competition with 497 points followed by Florida State in second (445 points) and Virginia in third (333.5 points).
Prelims:
Today's competition began with preliminaries in the 400-yard individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke this morning. In the 400 IM, senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), who was the 2006 ACC Champion in the event, swam an NCAA B-cut time of 4:22.48 for a fourth-place spot in the championship final. Also qualifying for the championship final was freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) after swimming a season-best time of 4:26.12 for an eighth place spot in finals. Junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) qualified for the 13th-place spot in the consolation final for the 400 IM with a season-best swim of 4:28.01 in the prelims.
In the 100 fly, freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) led the Terps by capturing a fourth-place seed in the championship final with an NCAA B-cut time of 54.96 for a career best. Two Terps qualified for the consolation final, both swimming season-best times. Freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman Patty DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) finished the prelims in 12th place (56.23) and 13th place (56.33) respectively.
Freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) notched a season best and NCAA B-cut time in the 200 free for a fourth-place seed in the championship final (1:49.15). Junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) qualified for the bonus consolation final in the 200 free after swimming a season-best time of 1:51.55 and finishing in 17th place. Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya earned a spot in the bonus consolation final with a career best of 1:52.35 for 22nd.
In the 100 breast, senior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) swam a season-best time of 1:06.26 for a 17th-place position in the bonus consolation final while junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) notched a 21st-place position in the bonus consolation final with a time of 1:07.67.
In the last event of the morning's prelims, freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) led the Terps in the 100 back, notching a season-best time of 56.83 for a sixth-place spot in the championship final. Senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) earned a spot in the consolation final after swimming a career-best time of 57.47 for the 14th-place position. Also qualifying for the consolation final was DeScenza (17th) with a season best in the event (57.79) and senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados) in 18th with a season best of 57.89.
Finals:
To start off the second day of finals, Malanina swam a season best and NCAA B-cut time of 4:17.62 to capture second place in the 400 IM and collect 17 points for Maryland. Rossi surpassed her season best established in prelims to finish seventh with a time of 4:25.27 and she picked up 12 points for the Terps. Also scoring points in the event was Jones with a 15th place finish in 4:29.02 (2 points).
In the championship final for the 100 fly, Vogel finished fourth with a NCAA B-cut time of 54.98, tallying 15 points. Broome swam another season best of 56.02 for an 11th place finish and six points, while DeScenza finished in 16th place with a time of 56.85 for one point.
Scoring 14 points for the Terps in the 200 free was Lehner in fifth place with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:49.86. Csomova went on to place 18th overall in the 100 breast with another season-best time of 1:06.09 and Smoak finished 21st with a season best of 1:06.99.
Davidson led the Terps in the 100 back with an eighth-place finish and new season best over her prelim time (56.63). Davidson picked up 11 points for Maryland in the 100 back while Laputka tallied five points with her 12th-place finish and new career best of 57.20. Ferdinand finished 18th in the event (57.95).
Maryland closed out the third day of ACCs with sixth-place finish and season-best time in the 400 medley relay (3:45.58) by the squad of Lehner, Malanina, Vogel and Skalinskaya for 26 points. Florida State won the relay with an NCAA B-cut time of 3:39.15.
Individual winners in tonight's finals included Virginia's Erin Corgan in the 400 IM with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:17.31, Florida State's Christie Raleigh in the 100 fly with an NCAA A-cut time of 53.00, Virginia's Jess Lewis in the 200 free with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:48.06, Florida State's Lauren Brick in the 100 breast with an NCAA A-cut time of 1:00.57, and Florida State's Romy Altman in the 100 back with an NCAA B-cut time of 55.14
The final day of competition in the Women's 2007 ACC Championships will begin tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. with preliminaries in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 1650 free. Finals for these events in addition to the 400 free relay will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Platform diving competition will also be held tomorrow.
